Names for real bats, plush bats, gothic OCs and animated bat characters, built from echolocation and night imagery, famous fictional bats, vampire lore and the actual bat species of the world, from Vesper and Sonar to Bartok, Fidget and Rouge.

About bat names

Bat names usually pull from three directions. Night and sound come first, because bats are nocturnal echolocators: Vesper (Latin for evening, and the root of vesper bats), Nocturne, Echo, Sonar, Dusk and Umbra all sit naturally on a bat. Second is fiction and folklore. Bartok from Anastasia, Fidget from The Great Mouse Detective, Stellaluna from the picture book, Rouge from Sonic, and Zubat and Noibat from Pokemon are among the best-known bat characters, and vampire lore contributes Vlad, Orlok, Carmilla, Mavis and Alucard. Third is the animal itself: fruit bats and flying foxes eat mango, fig and nectar; the tiny bumblebee bat (Kitti's hog-nosed bat) is the smallest mammal alive; and species names such as Pipistrelle, Myotis and Rousette make surprisingly elegant given names.

Tone matters. A plush bat or a nursery character wants something soft and squeaky (Pip, Fuzz, Nibbles, Beans), a gothic OC or Halloween mascot wants velvet and shadow (Belladonna, Lenore, Crypt, Nox), and a real rehab bat or a wildlife-center ambassador is often named for its markings or a bit of habitat (Speckle, Longears, Belfry, Grotto).

Many of these names double as good choices for other night creatures, so they suit a moth, an owl or a black cat that keeps bat hours.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether your bat is cute or creepy first; Pip, Beans and Fuzz signal a friendly bat, while Nox, Crypt and Orlok signal a gothic one.
  • Borrow real chiropteran words for an unusual but fitting name: Pipistrelle, Myotis, Rousette, Vespertine.
  • Fruit bats and flying foxes look nothing like microbats, so give them fruit or tropical names (Mango, Fig, Guava) instead of cave and shadow names.
  • For Halloween or plush bats, a pun goes a long way: Count Batula, Bat Bat, Wingnut, Meat Loaf.
  • If it is a real rescued bat, name it for a visible feature (Speckle, Longears, Snoot) so volunteers can tell individuals apart.

Frequently asked questions

What are some famous bat names from movies and books?

Bartok (Anastasia), Fidget (The Great Mouse Detective), Stellaluna (the picture book), Batty Koda (FernGully), Rouge the Bat (Sonic), Count Batula, and Pokemon bats Zubat, Golbat, Crobat, Noibat and Woobat.

What is a good name for a cute bat?

Soft, small-sounding names work best: Pip, Beans, Fuzz, Squeak, Nibbles, Pippa, Fig, Mochi-style food names, or Pipistrelle after the tiny European bat.

Are these names good for a gothic character or vampire OC?

Yes. Names like Vesper, Nox, Lenore, Belladonna, Carmilla, Orlok and Alucard come straight from gothic and vampire tradition and suit dark characters, familiars and shapeshifters.

Can I keep a bat as a pet?

In most countries, no; bats are protected wildlife and can carry rabies, so they should only be handled by licensed rehabilitators. These names are for plushies, characters, and bats you sponsor or watch in the wild.
