About vampire coven names

Vampire coven names do a different job than witch coven names. A witch circle names itself for a goddess or a herb; a vampire coven names itself for hunger, lineage and the long passage of time. The strongest names fall into a few recognisable families: aristocratic houses with a surname that sounds old and Central European (House Vasarhelyi, House Corvinescu), broods and courts built around a sire or a possessive image (Brood of Mother Hecuba, Court of the Pale Duchess), religious inversions that borrow church vocabulary (Parish, Sacrament, Communion, Requiem), Latin orders in the Vampire: The Masquerade style (Ordo Noctis Aeternae), and quiet modern cabals that hide behind a club, salon or society name.

What makes one sound right is restraint plus one sharp image. 'The Shadow Vampires' is nothing; 'The Quiet Throat' or 'The Coven of the Drowned Chapel' each imply a history. Good vampire covens also hint at how they feed and where they nest: a belfry, a cellar, a marsh, a gaslit street, a ruined abbey. Blood, ash, velvet, lanterns, bells and roses are the traditional palette, but the colour words (crimson, scarlet, sable, pale) work best as accents, not as the whole name.

  • Tie the name to a nest or hunting ground: a ruined chapel, a salt marsh, a row of gaslamps, a particular street. Place-anchored names (The Carfax Brood, The Rook Street Coterie) make a city feel lived-in.
  • Use church vocabulary for dread: Parish, Sacrament, Communion, Vesper, Requiem and Tithe all suggest a congregation that has twisted something holy.
  • Keep colour words as accents. One 'crimson' or 'pale' per name is plenty; stacking Blood, Shadow, Dark and Night together reads as parody.
  • For a chronicle with several covens, give each a different structure (one House, one Court, one Brood, one Latin order) so players can tell them apart by name alone.
