Copper dragons are the pranksters of the metallic dragons in Dungeons & Dragons: chaotic good, fond of riddles and bad puns, and happiest living in dry, rocky uplands where they can spring a joke on a passing traveler. Their names should carry that double nature. The published copper dragons of the Forgotten Realms, such as Galadaeros of Cormyr's Hullack Forest, use the same long Draconic shape as their gold and silver cousins (three to five syllables, open vowels, endings like -ax, -eth, -ith or -ar), but the flavor underneath is earthier and warmer than the grandeur of a gold or the chill of a white.

The most useful tricks are borrowed from the metal itself. Latin and Greek words for copper and its ores (cuprum, aes, chalkos, verdigris, patina, malachite, aerugo) make convincing roots: Cuprazeth, Aesalith, Chalkorran, Patinarys. Epithets should sound like a joke the dragon tells about itself rather than a threat: the Riddling, Three-Questions, Pennyscale, Whose Jokes Are Traps.

Copper dragons also spend years in humanoid form as wandering bards, tinkers and hermits, so a disposable alias such as Brother Pennywhistle or Old Man Tarnish is worth picking alongside the true name. Say the full name aloud; if it sounds like it could deliver a punchline with a straight face, it is a copper dragon.
