Generate Cockney character names with an East End of London feel: plain pairs like Albert Tanner and Maisie Wiggins, short forms like Alf Kerridge and Flo Gosling, nicknames like Reg "Nobby" Clark and Lofty Hawkins, plus Nanny Flo, Chrisp Street Charlie and the Jewish, Irish, Huguenot and present-day names of the same streets.

About Cockney names

A Cockney, by the old rule, is a Londoner born within the sound of Bow Bells, the bells of St Mary-le-Bow in the City, and in practice the word belongs to the East End: Bethnal Green, Stepney, Poplar, Bow and the docks. Names here are plain and short. Albert becomes Bert, Violet becomes Vi, Florence becomes Flo, and the surname does the placing: Tanner, Hobbs, Pickett, Cracknell and Honeyball sound like a street of terraces before anyone speaks.

Nicknames are the second layer. Some come free with the surname: a Clark is Nobby, a Miller is Dusty, a White is Chalky and a Murphy is Spud. Others come from the job (Sparks, Chippy, Inky) or from the pub (Lofty, Ginger, Tosh), and the women who ran the family are known by title: Nanny Flo, Auntie Joan, Old Ma Gower. A small share of the nicknames are rhyming slang, such as China for a mate.

The East End has always been an arrival point, so the list also carries Huguenot weaver surnames from Spitalfields, Irish names from the docks, the Jewish names of Whitechapel and the Bengali, Somali, Caribbean, West African and Turkish names of East London today. Plain pairs run by generation, from Edwardian to the present, so you can cast a whole family.

How to choose Cockney names

  • Match the first name to the generation: Ernest or Ada for a character born before 1910, Ronald or Joyce for someone born between the wars, Terry or Maureen for a young adult of the sixties, Gary or Tracey for a young adult of the eighties, Alfie or Maisie for a child today. Old names such as Stanley, Elsie and Mabel are back in fashion for babies.
  • Use the short form in dialogue and the full name on paper. A docker is Alf to his mates and Alfred on his ration book; his wife is Flo at the market and Florence on her marriage lines.
  • Give a surname nickname only where it fits the surname. Nobby goes with Clark, Dusty with Miller or Rhodes, Chalky with White, Tug with Wilson and Spider with Webb, and a reader who knows the tradition will notice a mismatch.
  • The rhyming-slang nicknames are easy to read once you know the rhyme: Whistle (whistle and flute, suit), Plates (plates of meat, feet), Loaf (loaf of bread, head), Daisies (daisy roots, boots), Apples (apples and pears, stairs), Butcher's (butcher's hook, look), Rabbit (rabbit and pork, talk), Jam Jar (car), Dog and Bone (phone), Frog and Toad (road), Currant Bun (sun), Rub-a-Dub (pub), Kettle (a watch), Tomfoolery (jewelry), Hampsteads (Hampstead Heath, teeth), North and South (mouth), Boat Race (face), Peckham (Peckham Rye, tie) and Dicky Dirt (shirt).
  • Many East End families moved out to Essex in the twentieth century, to Dagenham between the wars and to new towns such as Harlow and Basildon after 1945, and took their names with them. A Cockney surname fits a character from either place.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound Cockney?

Mostly plainness and shortening. Common English first names of the character's generation, cut down in daily use (Alf, Vi, Reg, Dot), sit with surnames that are common in London and Essex, as in Stan Pickett, Dot Gower or Ronnie Bright. A nickname in the middle, as in Reg "Nobby" Clark, finishes the effect.

Which nicknames in the list are rhyming slang?

Only a small group, and none of them is rude. Examples are Sid "China" Aylett (china plate, mate), Flo "Treacle" Bagley (treacle tart, sweetheart), Bert "Barnet" Barnard (Barnet Fair, hair), Vera "Rosie Lee" Bridger (tea) and Bill "Titfer" Darby (tit for tat, hat). The tips explain the rest, and every other nickname comes from a surname, a trade or the pub.

Does the list include Jewish, Irish and modern East London names?

Yes. You will find Jewish East End names such as Solly Abrahams and Sadie Goldstein, Irish names such as Paddy Driscoll and Bridie Mahoney, Huguenot surnames such as Agombar and Dupree, and present-day names such as Rahim Uddin, Hodan Jama and Tunde Adeyemi. All of them are real given names and surnames, used with the same respect as the rest of the list.

Are these the names of real people?

No real person is intended. The list is built from common first names, surnames and nicknames rather than from famous East Enders or television characters, so any match with a real person is a coincidence. Search a name yourself before you use it in published work.
