Generate authentic British names from across the UK: modern English favourites, old-fashioned wartime names, posh double-barrelled surnames, and Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish names alongside the multicultural names of modern Britain. Ideal for novels, screenplays, games and test data.

About british names

A British name gives itself away in the pairing. First names move in clear generational waves: Oliver, George, Amelia and Isla top today's birth registers, Gary, Tracey, Darren and Kerry belong to people born in the 1970s, and Alfred, Stanley, Edith and Doris mark the wartime generation, though many of those old names are now fashionable again for babies. Surnames are the deeper layer. The commonest (Smith, Jones, Taylor, Brown, Williams) are spread everywhere, but the ones that really sound British are regional: Ramsbottom, Sutcliffe and Greenhalgh are Lancashire and Yorkshire mill-town names, Trelawney and Penhaligon are Cornish, and MacLeod, Llewellyn and McAteer point straight to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Class comes through in names too. Double-barrelled surnames such as Fairfax-Lucy or Sackville-Howe, and first names like Rupert, Hugo, Arabella and Clementine read as landed-gentry or public-school, while Alfie, Kayleigh, Reece and Jade read as everyday and modern. Modern Britain is also multicultural, so Arjun Chauhan, Aisha Rahman and Amara Okafor are as British as Harriet Ashcombe.

This generator mixes all of these registers so you can pull a Home Counties solicitor, a Glasgow taxi driver, a 1940s land girl or a London sixth-former and have the name land correctly. Spellings follow British convention throughout.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match first name to birth decade. A character born in 1950 is far more likely to be Brian or Margaret than Jayden or Skye, and a grandmother called Edith or Mabel now shares her name with many toddlers.
  • Use the surname to place the character: -thwaite, -bottom and -cliffe endings are northern English, Tre-, Pol- and Pen- are Cornish, Mac/Mc and -son are Scottish or Northern Irish, and ap-derived names like Price, Pugh and Bowen are Welsh.
  • Reserve double-barrelled surnames and names like Peregrine or Araminta for aristocratic or comic upper-class characters; overusing them makes a whole cast sound like a costume drama.
  • Everyday British speech shortens names hard: Alfred becomes Alf, Elizabeth becomes Liz or Bet, and Thomas becomes Tom. Write the short form in dialogue and the full form on official documents.
  • Keep British spellings such as Geoffrey, Stephen, Philippa and Catriona rather than American forms like Jeffrey or Steven if you want the name to read as UK-born.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound British rather than American?

Mostly the surname and the spelling. British surnames are often place-based and regional (Ashworth, Pickering, Thistlethwaite), double-barrelling is far more common, and first names like Alfie, Poppy, Rupert, Gethin or Hamish are rarely used in the US. British spellings such as Geoffrey and Philippa and nicknames like Ollie, Bertie and Tilly also signal the UK.

Does this generator include Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish names?

Yes. Alongside English names you will see Scottish names like Eilidh Cameron and Fergus MacLeod, Welsh names like Rhys Llewellyn and Ffion Bevan, and Northern Irish names like Ciaran McAteer and Aoife Magennis, because all of them are British names in the UK sense.

Are there old-fashioned British names for historical stories?

Yes. Names such as Wilfred Barrowclough, Gladys Postlethwaite, Percival Standish and Ethel Sutcliffe suit characters born between roughly 1880 and 1940, and many of the short forms like Alf, Bert, Elsie and Nellie are exactly what those generations were called day to day.

Can I use these names for fiction, games or sample data?

Yes. Every name is a combination of common British first names and real British surnames, so any match with a specific person is coincidental. They work for novels, screenplays, RPG characters, UK-based test accounts and placeholder personas.
