Call names for Shih Tzus: Tibetan names like Tashi, Pema and Norbu, flower names such as Peony, Lotus and Mum for the chrysanthemum face, lion and teddy names like Shishi and Ewok, Chinese names and palace words like Mei and Jade, plus Topknot, Tassel, Duchess and Pebble.

About Shih Tzu names

The Shih Tzu takes its name from the Chinese word for lion, and its history gives a name list two homes. By tradition the breed began in Tibet, so the list opens with Tibetan given names: Tashi (good fortune), Pema (lotus), Norbu (jewel), Metok (flower) and Senge (lion), along with day-of-birth names such as Dawa and Nyima, which also mean moon and sun. Places and foods like Lhasa, Namtso and Tsampa sit beside them.

The second home is the Chinese court, where the little lion dog was a palace favorite and was kept and bred by the Dowager Empress Cixi. That gives Chinese given names such as Mei, Lan, Jin and Yu, familiar Chinese dog names like Wangcai and Laifu, and palace words: Empress, Jade, Pavilion, Celadon, Lion Dance.

The rest comes from the dog in front of you. Hair grows outward from the nose like petals, which is why the breed is nicknamed the chrysanthemum dog and why flowers are one of the largest groups here, from Mum and Peony to Osmanthus. The tied-up head fall gives Topknot, Bow, Tassel and Grosgrain, the round face gives Teddy, Ewok and Gizmo, a life on laps gives Duchess, Pasha and Velvet Cushion, and small sweet names and coat names such as Pebble, Honeycomb and Brindle finish the list.

How to choose Shih Tzu names

  • Tibetan names are single given names and many are used for both boys and girls, so Tashi, Pema, Dawa and Sonam suit any puppy. Wangmo, Dekyi and Yudon are usually female and Norbu, Dorje and Lobsang usually male.
  • A Tibetan child is often named for the day of the week it was born, and the same works for a dog: Dawa for Monday, Migmar for Tuesday, Phurbu for Thursday, Pasang for Friday, Penpa for Saturday and Nyima for Sunday.
  • Look at the coat. Gold Leaf, Honeycomb and Topaz suit gold dogs, Snowy, Ivory and Coconut suit white ones, and Brindle, Magpie, Piebald and Inkblot suit mixed coats. Remember that many Shih Tzu puppies lighten as they grow.
  • Keep the everyday name to one or two clear syllables, such as Mei, Pip, Lotus or Tashi, and save a long one like Chrysanthemum or Velvet Cushion for the paperwork.
  • For a pair, choose two names from one style: Dawa and Nyima, Peony and Lotus, Wangcai and Laifu, or Bow and Tassel.

Frequently asked questions

What are cool names for a Shih Tzu?

Names tied to the breed's story stand out from the usual small-dog list. Try Senge, Norbu, Tashi or Snow Lion from Tibet, Shishi, Qilin, Jade or Celadon from the Chinese side, and Aslan, Lionheart or Falkor for the lion and teddy look.

What does Shih Tzu mean?

It comes from the Chinese word for lion, so the breed is often called the lion dog. That is why the list has lion names such as Leo, Mane, Shizi and Stone Lion, and Senge, which is Tibetan for lion. The flowers come from a second nickname, the chrysanthemum dog.

What do the Chinese names in the list mean?

Mei can mean beautiful or plum blossom depending on the character, Jin is gold, Lan is orchid, Yu is jade, Bao is treasure and Xue is snow. Mudan is the peony and Juhua the chrysanthemum. Wangcai and Laifu are old favorites for dogs that wish for wealth and good luck, and Xiaobai simply means little white.

What are good names for a female Shih Tzu?

Flowers are the classic choice: Peony, Camellia, Orchid, Azalea and Blossom. Pema, Dekyi and Wangmo are Tibetan, Meili and Yulan are Chinese, and Duchess, Tiara, Contessa and Queenie suit a lap-dog queen. Ribbon, Silky and Button are good small names.
