Call names for toy, miniature and standard poodles: French names like Pierre, Colette and Bijou, curl and clip names like Ringlet, Bouclé and Pompom, patisserie and fabric words such as Macaron and Chiffon, coat colors like Apricot and Noir, and performer names like Encore.

About poodle names

Poodle names have a tradition of their own, and it starts with a surprise: the breed is German. The poodle began as a water retriever, its name comes from the German Pudel, from a word for splashing, and France later adopted it as its national dog under the name caniche, from the French word for a duck. So the list has a German and water share (Pudel, Fritz, Splash, Mallard) beside a larger French one: given names such as Pierre and Colette, endearments like Chérie, Bijou and Mon Chou, and the old French dog names Médor and Azor.

The coat does the rest. Curls and show clips give Ringlet, Frizz, Bouclé, Topknot, Pompom and Bracelet, the puffs left on the legs in a Continental clip. A groomed poodle suggests fabric and salon words (Chiffon, Tulle, Couture) and the patisserie window (Éclair, Macaron, Brioche). Coat names follow real poodle colors: Apricot, Café au Lait, Silver, Parti and Phantom. Champagne is here as the region and the pale color.

Poodles are quick learners and old circus performers, hence Einstein, Encore and Ringmaster. Last come small names for toys (Teacup, Miette, Petit Pois), grand ones for standards (Marquis, Duchesse, Fontainebleau) and three poodles of history: John Steinbeck's Charley, Winston Churchill's Rufus and Prince Rupert's Boye. They suit poodle crosses too.

How to choose poodle names

  • Let the size guide you. A toy poodle wears Teacup, Bitsy or Miette well, while a standard can carry Monsieur, Marquise or Fontainebleau, with a short everyday form such as Bleu.
  • Say a French name out loud before you choose it. Bijou is bee-ZHOO, Chérie is sheh-REE and Bouclé is boo-CLAY. The accents can be left off an ID tag if you prefer.
  • Steer clear of names that sound like cues. Beau can blur into no, and Fetch is a fine retriever joke but a confusing thing to shout in the park.
  • Match the coat: Apricot, Abricot or Peaches for apricot, Noir, Onyx or Ébène for black, Blanc, Neige or Ivoire for white, Argent, Sterling or Gris for silver, and Tuxedo, Domino or Harlequin for a parti poodle.
  • For two poodles, pick a pair from one style: Éclair and Macaron, Pierre and Colette, Fritz and Greta, or Razzle and Dazzle.

Frequently asked questions

What are some cool names for a poodle?

Names with a bit of edge or polish work well on a poodle: Noir, Onyx, Phantom, Bouclé, Encore, Maestro, Voltaire and Pudel are all in the list. French place names such as Rivoli, Biarritz and Chamonix sound smart without being frilly.

Are poodles French or German?

Both countries have a claim. The breed began in Germany as a water retriever, and Pudel is the German name it still carries. France made the poodle its national dog, which is why most poodle names are French. The list covers both, from Fritz, Greta and Schatzi to Gaston, Odette and Chouchou.

What are good names for a toy poodle?

Small, light names suit the smallest size: Teacup, Button, Peanut, Pixie, Bitsy, Smidgen, Miette (French for crumb) and Petit Pois (garden pea). Ironic grand names work too, so a four-pound Baron or Duchesse is a fair choice. Moyen and Klein, the French and German words for the medium size, are in the list as well.

Which real poodles are in the list?

Three. Charley was the standard poodle who rode along with John Steinbeck in Travels with Charley. Rufus was the name Winston Churchill gave his miniature poodles. Boye was the white poodle that went on campaign with Prince Rupert during the English Civil War.
