Generate British dog names from a list of 1,000: everyday favorites such as Alfie and Poppy, deadpan human names like Keith and Doreen, tea-time foods like Crumpet and Treacle, titles like Lord Wigglesworth, and names from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

About British dog names

A British dog name is rarely grand. Much of the charm is in giving a dog a name that belongs to an accountant or a great-aunt: Keith, Trevor, Doreen, Maureen. This list of 1,000 names starts there and works outward, to names that are common on British dogs, such as Alfie, Poppy and Monty, and to old-fashioned ones like Cyril and Winifred.

Food is the second big group. Tea-time gives Crumpet, Scone, Custard and Battenberg; the chip shop and the pub give Scampi, Pickled Onion and Dog and Duck. For the opposite effect there are titles, from Sir Reginald and Lady Penelope to Lord Wigglesworth. Places run from Camden and Whitstable to Skye, Snowdon and Mourne, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own names and words here: Hamish and Morag, Ianto and Seren, Wee Dug, Cariad, Soda Farl.

The rest is words and history: mild slang such as Brolly, Wellie and Kerfuffle, old money like Tuppence and Farthing, short working-collie names such as Moss and Fly, breed names and nicknames like Whippet and Westie, and writers and admirals from Dickens to Nelson. A small share are characters from British books, television and legend, and each of those carries its source in parentheses, as in Gromit (Wallace and Gromit). The names keep their British spelling.

How to choose British dog names

  • Say the name the way you will shout it across a park. Short names with a firm start, such as Monty, Pickle, Tess and Bertie, carry well. A long title like Lord Wigglesworth is for the vet's form and needs a short everyday version.
  • For a deadpan name, pick one that sounds like a neighbor, not a pet: Keith, Barry, Doreen, Sandra. The plainer the name, the funnier it is on a small fluffy dog.
  • Match a title to the dog's manner. Sir Humphrey suits a slow, dignified walker, while Major Mischief and Captain Wellies suit the one that finds every puddle.
  • Use where you live or where the breed comes from: a Welsh name such as Dylan or Carys for a corgi, a Scottish one such as Angus or Ailsa for a Westie, or a town like Harrogate or Whitstable if that is home.
  • Where an entry has parentheses, the name is the part before them, so Gromit and not the whole line. For Welsh and Gaelic spellings such as Siân and Mhairi, check how the name is said before you settle on it.

Frequently asked questions

What are funny British dog names?

The funniest are usually the most ordinary. Human names with no glamour at all, such as Nigel, Keith, Brenda and Doreen, are the classic British joke, and they get better with a title or a job, as in Sir Kevin or Geoff from Accounts. Food works the same way: Crumpet, Pickled Onion, Mushy Pea and Toad in the Hole are all in the list.

What are cool dog names in the UK?

For something cooler than cute, look at the place names and the history names. Camden, Soho, Skye, Arran and Harlech are short and strong, and so are Drake, Brunel, Boudica, Turing and Byron. Scottish and Welsh names such as Fergus, Idris and Branwen sound distinctive and are real names, not made up for the list.

Are these only English names?

No. The list covers the whole of the UK. There are Scottish names and Scots words (Hamish, Morag, Wee Dug, Dreich), Welsh names and places (Ianto, Seren, Cariad, Snowdon) and names from Northern Ireland (Mourne, Rathlin, Soda Farl, Yellowman), alongside English towns, rivers and London neighborhoods.

Why do some names have a title in parentheses?

A small share of the 1,000 names are characters from British books, plays, comics, television and legend, and each one shows its source in parentheses, for example Paddington (Paddington Bear), Bullseye (Oliver Twist) and Gnasher (The Beano). The source is a label to help you place the name, not part of it. Everything else in the list is a plain name, word, food, place, title or phrase.
