About Canadian town names

Canada's funniest town names are funny because nobody meant them to be. Moose Jaw, Elbow and Eyebrow are all in Saskatchewan, Newfoundland answers with Come By Chance, Heart's Content and Witless Bay, and Quebec has a parish with two exclamation marks in its name, Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha!. The pattern is plain speech: a body part, an animal, a hope or a complaint, put on the map with a straight face.

More than half of this list follows that pattern, with names such as Left Mitten, Fog Again Harbour, Moose Elbow and Forty Below beside the famous ones. Real place names and invented ones are mixed together and the page does not mark which is which, so look a name up on a map before you treat it as a real town or as your own invention.

The rest gives a Canadian map its ordinary layers: Scottish and English transplants, Quebec parishes in Saint- and Sainte- with their hyphens and accents, prairie sidings and grain towns, northern mining camps and fur-trade forts, and lake, portage and rapids names. Spelling is Canadian, so it is Harbour and Centre. Nothing here was invented to sound Indigenous: a name of First Nations, Inuit or Métis origin is in the list only as the name of an existing place.

How to choose Canadian town names

Choose the province before the name. Arm, Tickle, Bight and Cove belong to a Newfoundland outport, Siding, Coulee and Butte to the prairies, and a hyphenated Saint- name to Quebec or an Acadian shore.
For a funny name, stay deadpan. Flat, Sorry and Kneecap work because they read like something a surveyor wrote down without smiling.
Keep French names as they are written: Saint- before a man's name, Sainte- before a woman's, hyphens between the parts and the accents left on, as in Sainte-Émélie-de-l'Énergie.
Search a map before you publish. The list mixes real and invented names without marking them, and a real town deserves to be described as it is.
Pair a plain town with an odd neighbor. A story set in Rosetown gets more out of a rival rink in Moose Elbow than out of a second sensible name.

How do French-Canadian town names work?

Most Quebec parish names join a saint to a place or a family name with hyphens, as in Saint-Élie-de-Caxton, Sainte-Rose-du-Nord and Saint-Roch-des-Aulnaies. Saint- goes with a male saint and Sainte- with a female one, and the accents stay on. The list also has French names for capes, rivers and lakes, such as Cap-Chat and Rivière-du-Loup.
