Midwest Town Name Generator

Midwest town names come from a short burst of settlement between about 1830 and 1890, and that shows in how they sound. The oldest layer is Native American and French: Oconomowoc, Wapakoneta, Muscatine and Mishawaka are anglicized Algonquian and Siouan words, while Prairie du Chien, Fond du Lac and Terre Haute mark the routes of French traders. Settlers from the Northeast then laid classical and biblical names across Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, which is why every state has an Athens, a Troy, a Goshen and a Mount Pleasant.

The biggest group of names belongs to the people who built the towns. German and Scandinavian immigrants gave the region New Ulm, New Glarus, Frankenmuth, Lindstrom, Scandia and St. Ansgar. Railroads created hundreds of towns from nothing and named them for company officials, so short surnames ending in -ville, -burg or -ton sit next to Junctions, Centers, Crossings and Landings. Farm towns took the names of the crops and creeks around them: Wheatland, Sugar Grove, Honey Creek, Coon Rapids.

The most convincing Midwest names feel a little plain.
