Ideal for novels, screenplays, games and tabletop campaigns set in the heartland.
About midwest town names
Midwest town names come from a short burst of settlement between about 1830 and 1890, and that shows in how they sound. The oldest layer is Native American and French: Oconomowoc, Wapakoneta, Muscatine and Mishawaka are anglicized Algonquian and Siouan words, while Prairie du Chien, Fond du Lac and Terre Haute mark the routes of French traders. Settlers from the Northeast then laid classical and biblical names across Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, which is why every state has an Athens, a Troy, a Goshen and a Mount Pleasant.
The biggest group of names belongs to the people who built the towns. German and Scandinavian immigrants gave the region New Ulm, New Glarus, Frankenmuth, Lindstrom, Scandia and St. Ansgar. Railroads created hundreds of towns from nothing and named them for company officials, so short surnames ending in -ville, -burg or -ton sit next to Junctions, Centers, Crossings and Landings. Farm towns took the names of the crops and creeks around them: Wheatland, Sugar Grove, Honey Creek, Coon Rapids.
The most convincing Midwest names feel a little plain. A county seat called Grundy Center sounds more authentic than anything grand, and quirky post-office names like What Cheer, Sleepy Eye and Lost Nation are real. This generator mixes real small towns from Ohio to the Dakotas with invented names built on the same patterns.
Tips for choosing a name
- Anchor the name in the right state: Scandinavian and Native names read as Minnesota or Wisconsin, German names as Ohio, Missouri or Wisconsin, and French names along the Mississippi and Great Lakes.
- Pair a plain surname with Center, Junction, Grove, Prairie or City for a county-seat feel (Grundy Center, Webster City, Elk Grove); these modifiers are far more Midwestern than Heights or Hills.
- Use a creek, lake or crop as the base for a farm town: Honey Creek, Clear Lake, Wheatland and Sugar Grove all sound like places with a grain elevator and a Casey's.
- For a fictional town that should not exist, combine an uncommon settler surname (Halvorsen, Ruhlman, Bixby) with a feature word and check a map before publishing; hundreds of tiny real towns share names.
- Say it the way locals would. Midwesterners shorten and flatten names (Versailles is 'ver-SALES', Nevada is 'ne-VAY-da'), so a name that invites a local pronunciation feels rooted.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a town name sound Midwestern?
A mix of Native-derived words (Wapsipinicon, Oconomowoc), German and Scandinavian settler names (New Ulm, Lindstrom), classical and biblical transplants (Athens, Goshen), and plain practical names with Center, Junction, Grove, Prairie or Falls. The overall effect is modest rather than grand, which is exactly why names like Grundy Center feel so real.
Are these real Midwest towns or made up?
Both. Many names here are real small towns from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas, included because they show the authentic patterns. The rest are invented using the same surname, settler and landscape conventions, so they read as plausible but are unlikely to match a real place.
Can I use a Midwest town name in my novel or game?
Yes. Place names are not copyrighted, and the invented names are free to use in commercial work. If you use a real town, that is fine for fiction, but avoid attributing anything defamatory to the real place and consider changing a word or two if you want to be safe.
Why do so many Midwest towns have 'New' or a saint's name in front?
Immigrants named towns after the places they left, so New Ulm, New Glarus, New Bremen and New Prague mark German, Swiss and Czech settlements. Saints' names (St. Ansgar, St. Olaf, St. Henry, Maria Stein) usually mark a Catholic or Lutheran congregation that founded the town around its church.
