There is no single Canadian name, and that is the point. English Canada tracks the US and UK charts, with Liam, Noah, Olivia and Emma on top and a lingering fondness for names like Gord, Doug, Bev and Marnie in older generations. Québec has its own conventions: hyphenated doubles such as Marc-André, Jean-François, Marie-Ève and Marie-Pier were hugely popular in the 1970s and 80s, and current favorites include Félix, Émile, Rosalie and Florence. Indigenous names, whether Anishinaabe, Cree, Inuit or Mi'kmaq, appear both as traditional given names like Kateri and Wapasu and as surnames like Cardinal, Kakegamic and Kunuk.

A good Canadian character name signals region: an Ouellet from Rimouski, a Melnyk from Saskatoon and a Sidhu from Surrey each place the character on the map before a word of dialogue.
