Generate fan-made tailed beast names for Naruto original characters and role-play: counted beasts like Inazuma, the One-Tail and Higuma, the Two-Tailed Brown Bear, folklore beasts like Onamazu, the Earthquake Catfish, and village epithets like the Calamity of the Marsh. The nine beasts from the series appear only as reference entries marked (canon).

About tailed beast names

In Naruto, the tailed beasts (bijuu) are giant creatures of living chakra, told apart by their number of tails: nine of them, from the one-tailed Shukaku to the nine-tailed Kurama, plus the Ten-Tails they came from. Their names lean on Japanese language and folklore. Matatabi is the Japanese word for silver vine, a plant cats love, Son Goku is the Japanese name of the Monkey King, and Gyuki is a reading of the ox demon ushi-oni.

This list is fan-made and follows the same recipe. Japanese names here are ordinary words or folklore creatures, and the English epithet says what the beast is, so Higuma, the Two-Tailed Brown Bear and Onamazu, the Earthquake Catfish mean what they say. Some entries are a bare name (Ikazuchi, Asagiri), some add only a count (Inazuma, the One-Tail), and some are English alone (the Two-Tailed Iron Crab). Counts are spread evenly from one to ten, with a few zero-tail oddities, and many village epithets such as the Calamity of the Marsh leave the count open.

The nine beasts from the series are included for reference and marked (canon). Everything else was written for original characters, fan fiction and role-play and is not part of the series. This site is not affiliated with Naruto, its author or its publishers.

How to choose tailed beast names

  • Decide the tail count before the name. If your story keeps the nine beasts of the series, give your original beast zero tails, ten tails or no stated count, or set the story in an alternate world where the numbers are free.
  • Let the animal and the element drive the host's abilities. In the series Shukaku brings sand and Son Goku brings lava, so the Two-Tailed Iron Crab suggests armor and pincers, and Four-Tailed Tsurara, named for an icicle, suggests ice.
  • Give the beast two names: a true name it rarely shares and the name frightened villagers use. Pair a bare name like Ikazuchi with an epithet like the Storm With Teeth, the way Kurama is simply the Nine-Tails to most people.
  • Keep the true name short. The names in the series run two to four syllables (Gyuki, Shukaku, Kurama, Matatabi), which is easy to shout in a fight scene.
  • Look up a Japanese word yourself before you build a backstory on its meaning. The spellings here drop long-vowel marks, so Okami stands for the word for wolf and Fukuro for owl.

Frequently asked questions

Are these tailed beast names canon?

Only nine entries come from the series, and each is marked (canon): Shukaku, Matatabi, Isobu, Son Goku, Kokuo, Saiken, Chomei, Gyuki and Kurama. Everything else, from Raiu, the Four-Tails to the Six-Tailed River Serpent, is fan-made for original characters and role-play and is not part of the series.

How many tails can a tailed beast have?

In the series the beasts have one to nine tails, and the Ten-Tails stands above them. This list spreads its counted beasts evenly from one to ten and adds a few zero-tail oddities such as Utsuro, the Zero-Tails. Many entries, like Old Grandfather Tide or the Chained Eclipse, give no count so you can set your own.

What do the Japanese names in the list mean?

They are ordinary Japanese words or creatures from folklore, and where an epithet follows, it agrees with the word. Higuma is a brown bear, Tsuru is a crane, Ikazuchi is thunder and Asagiri is morning mist. Onamazu is the giant catfish that folklore blames for earthquakes, and Baku is the eater of dreams.

Can I use these names for a jinchuriki character?

Yes. The list names the beast, not its host, so choose the beast here and name the person with a shinobi name of your own. A beast like Kawauso, the Nine-Tailed River Otter suits a host from a river village, while the Urn-Bound Flood suits a beast that has been sealed for generations.
