Beauty and the Beast Name Generator
Enchanted servants, villagers and cursed princes
Browse 500 Beauty and the Beast names, opening with characters from the 1991 film, the stage musical and the 2017 film such as Belle, Gaston, Lumiere and Cogsworth. The rest are new names in the story's two styles: enchanted servants named for the object they became, like Madame Bouilloire and Mr. Tickwell, and storybook French villagers like Monsieur Aubert the Baker.
About Beauty and the Beast names
Beauty and the Beast is an old French fairy tale, published by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve in 1740 and retold in a shorter form by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont in 1756. The tale names almost no one: the heroine is simply Belle, the beauty, beside a merchant, his other children and the Beast. The names people look for come from the Disney versions.
This list opens with those. Belle, the Beast, Gaston, LeFou, Maurice, Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip and the horse Philippe are from the 1991 animated film. Babette and Madame de la Grande Bouche are the feather duster and the wardrobe of the stage musical. The 2017 film calls them Plumette and Madame de Garderobe and adds Maestro Cadenza, Agathe, Père Robert, Chapeau, Frou-Frou and Cuisinier. Forte, Fife, Angelique, Fifi, Webster and LePlume come from the video sequels.
Everything after The West Wing is new and only written in the style. Most entries follow the household recipe, a servant named for the object they became, in French (Madame Bouilloire, a kettle) or in English wordplay (Mr. Tickwell, a clock). The rest are storybook villagers, suitors, enchantresses, princes, animals and places.
How to choose Beauty and the Beast names
- For an enchanted servant, start from the object and add a title that fits the job: Maître Clavecin for a music master who became a harpsichord, Mère Marmite for a cook turned cooking pot, Petite Cuillère for the smallest spoon in the drawer.
- French nouns have a gender, and it shows in the small words: Madame de la Soupière, Monsieur du Fourneau, Madame de l'Horloge. The title itself does not have to match the noun, so a folding screen, which is masculine in French, can still be Madame Paravent.
- English puns work the way Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts do, with a plain surname that hides the object. Mrs. Kettleby, Mr. Inkwell and Major Mainspring all sound like staff until you look twice.
- A villager needs only a given name and a trade: Blaise the Cooper, Lucienne the Lacemaker or, in French, Colin le Berger, the shepherd.
- Keep the accents where you can, as in Théière, Églantine and Réglisse. If a game or a name tag will not take them, plain e and a are the usual fallback.
Frequently asked questions
Which names here are actual Beauty and the Beast characters?
The first thirty. They come from the 1991 film (Belle, the Beast, Gaston, LeFou, Maurice, Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip, Philippe), the stage musical (Babette, Madame de la Grande Bouche), the 2017 film (Plumette, Madame de Garderobe, Maestro Cadenza, Agathe, Père Robert, Chapeau, Frou-Frou, Cuisinier, the village of Villeneuve) and the video sequels (Forte, Fife, Angelique, Fifi, Webster, LePlume). It is a selection, not a full cast list, and everything after The West Wing is new.
What are the enchanted objects called?
In the 1991 film Lumiere is the candelabra, Cogsworth the mantel clock, Mrs. Potts the teapot and her son Chip the teacup. The feather duster has three names: Babette on stage, Fifi in the video sequel Belle's Magical World and Plumette in the 2017 film. The wardrobe is Madame de la Grande Bouche on stage and Madame de Garderobe in 2017.
Is the Beast's real name Prince Adam?
That name is never spoken in the 1991 film, where he is only the Beast, the prince or the master. Adam comes from later licensed material, so it is not listed with the film names here. For a cursed prince of your own, the list has Prince Aurélien, Prince Évariste and Le Prince Maudit, which is French for the cursed prince.
Can I use these names for a party, a school play or a story?
Yes, that is what the new names are for: place cards at a themed party, extra servants in a school production, tabletop characters and bedtime stories. The film characters belong to Disney, so keep those to fan use. This page is a fan resource with no connection to the studio.
