Thestral Name Generator

Thestrals are the skeletal, bat-winged horses of the Forbidden Forest, visible only to people who have watched someone die. The one named thestral in the books is Tenebrus, Hagrid's favourite, and that single name sets the tone for the whole species: a Latin word for darkness, three syllables, a hard ending. Names that sound right for a thestral follow the same logic. Umbra, Noctis, Caligo and Funestus come straight from the Latin of shadow and mourning; Erebus, Achlys, Lethe and Charon borrow from the Greek underworld; Ankou, Morrigan and Hela pull from Celtic and Norse figures who escort the dead.

The second register is plainer English. Because thestrals are bone-white, silent and strangely gentle, word-names like Wraith, Shroud, Gloaming, Knell and Hemlock fit as well as any invented name, and two-word titles such as Pale Rider, Last Light or Widow's Walk read like something carved on a lychgate. Horse-style barn names (Hollow Hoof, Stormshade, Ghostgallop) work for a herd where you need a dozen distinct individuals.
