Historical and family names of the Blackfoot Confederacy
Browse 500 Blackfoot names for research, history projects and fiction: leaders in the Blackfoot language with the recorded English rendering, such as Isapo-Muxika (Crowfoot) and Mekaisto (Red Crow), historical names such as Heavy Runner and Running Eagle, and family names such as Many Guns, Weasel Head and Tailfeathers.
About Blackfoot names
The Blackfoot Confederacy is four nations: the Siksika, the Kainai or Blood and the Piikani in Alberta, and the Blackfeet Nation in Montana. They share the Blackfoot language, which belongs to the Algonquian family, and call themselves Niitsitapi.
A Blackfoot name is not chosen from a list. It is given in ceremony, often by an elder, and a name can be transferred from one person to another, so a person may carry several in a lifetime. The Siksika chief known in English as Crowfoot was called Shot Close as a child and Bear Ghost as a young man before he took the name Isapo-Muxika. The list gives a Blackfoot form only together with the English rendering that is on record, and it keeps old spellings as they were written, such as Chapo-Mexico for Crowfoot in Treaty 7 of 1877 and the painter George Catlin's Stu-mick-o-súcks of 1832.
Family names came with the agency and treaty rolls, when a father's name was written down as a surname: Many Guns, Weasel Head, Calf Robe, Standing Alone. In Montana many are written as one word, as in Bullshoe and Heavyrunner. The page is meant for research, history projects and fiction. It is not a way to take a Blackfoot name, which only the people themselves can give.
How to choose Blackfoot names
- Keep a Blackfoot form and its English rendering together, as in Peenaquim (Seen From Afar). Do not build new Blackfoot names by translating English words one by one.
- Match the name to the nation. Crowfoot, Old Sun and Running Rabbit were Siksika, Red Crow and Seen From Afar were Kainai, and Mountain Chief, Heavy Runner and White Calf were Piegan leaders in Montana.
- Spellings such as Matose-Apiw and Pe-tóh-pee-kiss were written by treaty clerks and travelers who did not speak Blackfoot. Use them for a document of the 1800s, and a modern spelling such as Mi'kai'sto for anything set today.
- Family names are written both as separate words and as one word, as in Crow Shoe and Yellowhorn. Pick one form for a character and keep it.
- For a real person, a place or a ceremony, go to the nations themselves. The Siksika, Kainai, Piikani and Blackfeet nations each have language and culture programs.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real Blackfoot names?
The historical names are those of recorded Blackfoot people, among them Isapo-Muxika (Crowfoot), Mekaisto (Red Crow), Heavy Runner and Julia Wades in the Water, and the family names are carried by families of the four nations. The list has not been checked by Blackfoot speakers or by any of the nations, so confirm a spelling in a published source before you rely on it. Full names such as Wilfred Crow Shoe pair a common first name with a Blackfoot family name, so they are combinations and may match a real person only by chance.
Can I use this to find my own Blackfoot name?
No. Blackfoot names are given and transferred in ceremony by people who have the right to give them. The list is for research, history projects and fiction, and a random generator cannot stand in for that.
Why does Crowfoot appear under three spellings?
Blackfoot had no standard spelling in the 1800s, so each writer put down what he heard. Crowfoot is Chapo-Mexico in the text of Treaty 7, Isapo-Muxika in older history books and Issapoomahksika in a modern spelling. The list keeps each recorded spelling with the same English rendering, so you can tell that they are one name.
Is it Blackfoot or Blackfeet?
Both are in use. Blackfoot is the usual word in Canada and for the language, and it translates Siksika, the name of one of the four nations. Blackfeet is the official name of the nation in Montana, the Blackfeet Nation, whose people are the southern Piikani.
