About Congolese last names

In the DR Congo a full name traditionally has three parts: a name, a post-name (postnom) and a given name, as in Mukendi Kalala Joseph. The postnom became compulsory in 1972, when the authenticity policy of the Mobutu years replaced Christian first names with ancestral ones, and it is still printed on identity papers. Many families therefore do not pass down one surname in the European way: a child can receive a name of its own, often a grandparent's, beside the father's. Across the river in the Republic of the Congo, names follow the French pattern of given name plus family name.

This list holds names and post-names only, one per entry, from both countries. Tshi- names such as Tshibangu and Tshimanga come from the Tshiluba-speaking Kasai, where Mbuyi and Kanku are the names of an elder and a younger twin. Among the Kongo, Nsimba and Nzuzi are twins and Nlandu is the child born after them. Kambale, Kasereka and Kavira are birth-order names of the Nande in North Kivu, and Mugisho, Bisimwa and Mushagalusa are Shi names from around Bukavu. Brazzaville adds Itoua, Poaty, Tchicaya and Mavoungou.

Names travel with people, so read these regional notes as tendencies and never as proof of where one person is from.

How to choose Congolese last names

  • For a character from the DR Congo, build the three-part form: take two entries from this list and add a given name, as in Ilunga Kabongo Patrick. On forms and school lists the name comes first and the given name last.
  • Let the spelling show the side of the river. The DR Congo writes Mavungu and Nkunku, while Brazzaville, with French spelling, writes Mavoungou and Nkounkou for the same sounds.
  • Do not assume siblings share a name. Where names are given child by child, two brothers can carry different names and post-names, which is a useful detail in a family story.
  • Say Tshi- as "chee". The Shi names of South Kivu spell the same sound with a plain C, as in Cibalonza and Cirimwami.
  • Search a full combination before you publish it. Joining two well-known names by accident can produce the name of a real public figure.

Frequently asked questions

What is a postnom in a Congolese name?

It is a second ancestral name that follows the name and comes before the given name, so in Mukendi Kalala Joseph the postnom is Kalala. It was introduced across the country in 1972 and identity papers in the DR Congo still have a line for it. Congo-Brazzaville follows the French pattern of given name and family name instead.

What are some well-known Congolese last names?

In the DR Congo you will meet Ilunga, Kabongo, Kasongo, Mukendi, Mbuyi, Kalala and Kazadi in the Luba-speaking regions, Nsimba, Nzuzi and Matondo among the Kongo, and Kambale and Kasereka in North Kivu. In Congo-Brazzaville, Mabiala, Nganga, Malonga and Itoua are familiar. All of these are in the list, which follows no official ranking.

Are names different in the two Congos?

Kongo names such as Nsimba, Makaya, Mabiala and Malonga are found on both banks of the river. Brazzaville adds names like Itoua, Okemba, Ondongo, Elenga, Poaty and Tchicaya, and it spells in the French way, with ou and tch. The DR Congo has the large Luba, Mongo and Kivu name stocks and the postnom.

Can a Congolese name tell me someone's ethnic group or region?

Not reliably. Many names are shared between neighboring peoples and across borders, and people move and marry. This list was screened for duplicates, so if a name matters for your project, look it up yourself before you rely on it.
