Cheyenne Name Generator
Historical and family names of the Cheyenne people
Browse 500 Cheyenne names for research, history projects and fiction: leaders in the Cheyenne language with the recorded English rendering, such as Mo'ohtavetoo'o (Black Kettle) and Vóóhéhéve (Morning Star), historical names such as Dull Knife and Iron Teeth, and Northern and Southern Cheyenne family names such as Twomoons and Oakerhater.
About Cheyenne names
The Cheyenne call themselves Tsétsêhéstâhese and Só'taeo'o, the two peoples who joined to form the nation. Today they are two federally recognized nations: the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, whose reservation lies around Lame Deer in southeastern Montana, and the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes in western Oklahoma, where the Southern Cheyenne share a government with the Southern Arapaho. This page is about the people, not the first name Cheyenne or the city in Wyoming.
Cheyenne names are given by families and elders, often handed down from a relative, and a person could carry more than one name in a lifetime. The leader most Americans know as Dull Knife was Vóóhéhéve, Morning Star, to his own people; Dull Knife is the name the Lakota used for him. The list gives a Cheyenne form with the English rendering that is on record, as in Ó'kôhómôxháahketa (Little Wolf), and keeps treaty spellings such as Moke-tav-a-to as the clerks wrote them.
Family names came with the agency rolls of the late 1800s, when an ancestor's name became a surname: Twomoons, Standsintimber and Woodenlegs in Montana, Oakerhater, Heap of Birds and Cometsevah in Oklahoma. The list is meant for research, history projects and fiction. It is not a way to find a name for yourself, which is a matter for Cheyenne families.
How to choose Cheyenne names
- Keep a Cheyenne form and its English rendering together, as in Hotóa'ôxháa'êstaestse (Tall Bull). Do not build new Cheyenne names by translating English words one by one.
- Match the name to the nation and the period. Dull Knife, Wild Hog and Iron Teeth belong to the Northern Cheyenne story of the 1870s, while Medicine Water, Gray Beard and the Fort Marion artists belong to the Southern Cheyenne.
- Treaty spellings such as O-to-ah-nac-co (Bull Bear) were written by clerks who did not speak Cheyenne. Use them for a document of the 1860s, and the modern spelling for anything set today.
- Family names such as Littlecoyote and Whiteshield are also written Little Coyote and White Shield. Pick one form for a character and keep it.
- For a real person, a place or a ceremony, go to the nations themselves. The Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes both have language and culture programs.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real Cheyenne names?
The historical names are those of recorded Cheyenne people, among them Mo'ohtavetoo'o (Black Kettle), Dull Knife, Iron Teeth and the Fort Marion artist Honanistto (Howling Wolf), and the family names are carried by Northern and Southern Cheyenne families. The list has not been checked by Cheyenne speakers or by either nation, so confirm a spelling in a published source before you rely on it. Full names such as Alvin Redcherries pair a common first name with a Cheyenne family name, so they are combinations and may match a real person only by chance.
Can I use this to find my own Cheyenne name?
No. Cheyenne names are given by families and elders and are often handed down from a relative. The list is for research, history projects and fiction, and a random generator cannot stand in for that.
Why do some leaders appear under two or three spellings?
Cheyenne had no standard spelling in the 1800s, so each clerk wrote what he heard. Black Kettle is Mo-ta-va-to in the treaty of 1861, Moke-tav-a-to in the treaty of 1867 and Mo'ohtavetoo'o in the modern spelling. The list keeps each recorded spelling with the same English rendering, so you can tell that they are one name.
Is this page about the first name Cheyenne?
No. It is about the names of the Cheyenne people, the Northern Cheyenne of Montana and the Southern Cheyenne of Oklahoma. The first name and the city of Cheyenne, Wyoming both take their name from the people, but neither is covered here.
