Generate names that sound like they belong on Mata Nui, Metru Nui, or Bara Magna: short, punchy Toa and Matoran names, Turaga elders, Rahkshi and Makuta villains, and Glatorian warriors, all following the Polynesian-inspired conventions LEGO used for Bionicle. Includes canon characters plus original names for your own Toa team.

About bionicle names

Bionicle names have a very specific sound because LEGO originally borrowed heavily from Māori and other Polynesian languages: two or three syllables, lots of open vowels, and consonants like t, k, h, m, and n. Tahu, Gali, Lewa, Pohatu, Onua, and Kopaka set the template, and later generations kept it for Toa (Jaller, Hahli, Matoro), Matoran (Takua, Kapura, Macku), and Turaga (Vakama, Nokama, Whenua). Villains break the pattern deliberately: Makuta names such as Teridax, Icarax, Antroz, and Chirox use harsher endings, x and z, and Piraka names (Vezok, Hakann, Zaktan) sound clipped and aggressive.

Roles matter as much as sounds. A Toa is usually referred to as Toa plus name (Toa Tahu), a Turaga as Turaga plus name, and Makuta likewise, so a formal name is really a title plus a personal name. Elemental identity also shows through: fire and stone names often start hard (Tahu, Pohatu, Hewkii), water names flow (Gali, Nokama, Hahli), and air names feel lighter (Lewa, Matau, Kongu). Bara Magna's Glatorian and Agori (Ackar, Kiina, Gresh, Berix, Tarix) shift toward slightly more Latin-flavored sounds.

The names here include canon characters from every generation, the Bohrok and Rahkshi breeds, and a full set of original Toa, Matoran, Turaga, and Makuta names built to the same rules so you can populate an island of your own.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Stick to two or three syllables with open vowels and t, k, h, m, or n consonants (Tahu, Onewa, Hahli) for a Toa or Matoran; anything longer sounds off-brand.
  • Give villains harder endings such as -ax, -ox, or -ak (Teridax, Chirox, Vezok) to match Makuta and Piraka naming.
  • Match sound to element: hard starts for fire and stone, flowing sounds for water, light and airy syllables for air.
  • Prefix the name with its role, Toa, Turaga, or Makuta, when introducing the character formally.
  • For a Toa team, pick six names that share a rhythm but start with different letters, the way Tahu, Gali, Lewa, Pohatu, Onua, and Kopaka do.

Frequently asked questions

What language are Bionicle names based on?

The original 2001 Bionicle names drew heavily on Māori and other Polynesian words, which is why they use open vowels and consonants like t, k, h, and n. After a 2001 dispute with Māori groups, LEGO changed a few names (Tohunga became Matoran) and later generations mixed in more invented sounds.

How are Toa, Turaga, and Matoran names different?

They share the same sound rules, but Toa and Turaga names are used with their title (Toa Tahu, Turaga Vakama), and a Matoran who becomes a Toa keeps the same name, as Jaller and Hahli did. Villains like the Makuta and Piraka use harsher x, z, and k endings.

Can I use these names for my own Bionicle MOC or fan story?

Yes. The original names here are free to use for MOCs, fan fiction, and games. Canon character names remain LEGO's property and are included as reference.

Why do names like Tahnok and Turahk look similar?

Bohrok and Rahkshi breeds are named systematically, with each name built from an element or trait plus a shared ending (-ok for Bohrok, -ahk for Rahkshi). Copying that pattern is a good way to name your own swarm or breed.
