Names for Great Pyrenees dogs and Pyr mixes, male and female: white-coat names like Nuage and Snowdrift, gentle giants like Moose and Gulliver, flock-guardian names such as Patou and Warden, and peaks, valleys and given names from the Pyrenees, from Aneto to Gavarnie.

About Great Pyrenees names

The Great Pyrenees, known in Britain as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, takes its name from the mountains between France and Spain, where it was bred to live with flocks of sheep. In France the dog is nicknamed the patou, and the breed is said to have been named the royal dog of France at the court of Louis XIV. All of that gives a Pyr owner far more to choose from than Snowball.

The list is built from those sources. There are real places from the range: the peaks Aneto, Vignemale and Canigou, the cirque of Gavarnie, the Ordesa valley, the Tourmalet pass and towns such as Jaca, Foix and Lourdes. There are given names from both sides of the mountains: Basque (Ander, Amaia, Edurne), Occitan (Arnaut, Esclarmonda, Magali), French, Catalan and Spanish. And there are plain words from those languages, such as elur, neige and nieve, the Basque, French and Spanish words for snow.

The rest is about the dog in front of you: white-coat names (Nuage, Snowdrift, Marshmallow), gentle giants (Moose, Gulliver, Big Softie), flock and shepherd names (Warden, Bo Peep, Lambkin), French court names (Dauphin, Marquise, Versailles) and a few Pyr puns such as Pyrfect and Vampyre.

How to choose Great Pyrenees names

  • A Pyr is often out of arm's reach, so pick a name you can call clearly. Two syllables with a strong first sound, like Patou, Mendi or Gaston, carry better than Néouvielle.
  • If you choose a place or a word from Basque, Occitan, Catalan, French or Spanish, look up how it is said. Jaca starts with the throaty Spanish j, Foix sounds like fwah, and the Basque x in Xabier or Uxue is said like sh.
  • Long names work as a formal name with a short call name: Esclarmonda can be Essie at home, Fontainebleau can be Blue and Roncesvalles can be Ronnie.
  • Size jokes age well with this breed. A puppy called Tiny, Osito (Spanish for little bear) or Petit Roi (French for little king) will not stay small for long.
  • Two Pyrs? Pair names from one theme, such as Aspe and Ossau (neighboring valleys in Béarn), Berger and Bergère, or Roi and Reine.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a Great Pyrenees?

Names that fit the size, the white coat or the mountain home of the breed tend to work well. From this list, try Patou, Aneto, Nuage, Moose, Warden, Gavarnie, Edurne or Dauphin. Short names with a clear first sound are the easiest to call across a field.

What does Patou mean?

Patou is the everyday French nickname for the breed. The word is usually traced to pastre, an old word for shepherd, which is also in the list as Pastre, its Occitan form.

Are the Basque, Occitan and Spanish names in the list real?

Yes. The given names are real names from both sides of the range, such as Ander, Maialen and Itsaso (Basque), Guilhem and Azalaïs (Occitan), Meritxell and Oriol (Catalan) and Pilar and Ramiro (Spanish). The place names are real peaks, valleys, passes, rivers and towns. Look up the pronunciation before you choose, since several are not said the way an English speaker would guess.

What are good names for a white dog as big as a Pyr?

Snow and cloud names are the classic choice: Blizzard, Avalanche, Nimbus, Snowdrift, Flocon (French for snowflake) and Nube (Spanish for cloud). For size there are Moose, Mammoth, Goliath, Yak and Floof Mountain.
