Cool names for a German Shepherd: German given names like Falko, Hagen, Liesel and Isolde, German words like Bär and Schatten, K9 and search names like Justice and Pathfinder, plus herding, coat and heroic names.

About German Shepherd names

The German Shepherd was standardized in Germany in 1899, when Max von Stephanitz founded the breed club, and its German name is Deutscher Schäferhund. In Britain it was long called the Alsatian. That origin is why the largest part of this list is real German given names: Falko, Konrad, Hagen and Wolfram for males, Liesel, Frieda, Lotte and Isolde for females. German words follow, each chosen for its meaning, such as Bär (bear), Treu (loyal), Wächter (watchman), Schatten (shadow) and Schatzi (sweetheart), along with rivers, mountains and towns like Isar, Zugspitze and Heidelberg.

The second half is the working dog. German Shepherds serve with police units and search teams around the world, so there are K9 names (Justice, Sentinel, Deputy, Tango, Bravo), search-and-rescue names (Pathfinder, Beacon, Waypoint, True North) and herding names from the breed's first job (Shepherd, Bellwether, Furrow, Crook).

Coat names cover black and tan, sable, solid black and white: Saddleback, Agouti, Obsidian, Alabaster. The last group is heroic names in the spirit of the shepherds that starred in films of the 1920s, such as Valiant, Dauntless and Matinee. For wolfish or Arctic names, the wolf and husky generators are the better place to look.

How to choose German Shepherd names

  • Say the name out loud across a yard before you settle. Two-syllable names with a hard consonant, like Falko, Benno, Tango or Heidi, carry well.
  • Match the coat. Obsidian, Noir and Nightfall suit a solid black dog, Alabaster, Schnee and Weiss a white one, Saddleback, Russet and Tawny a black and tan, and Agouti, Wolf Grey and Grizzle a sable.
  • Check how a German name is said before you commit, above all one with an umlaut such as Götz, Löwe or König. Bär is close to the English word bear.
  • German breeders often name a litter by letter, so every pup in the B litter gets a B name. The list has German names for most letters, from Anselm and Bastian to Xaver and Zenzi.
  • Naming two shepherds? Take a pair from the same strand: Hansel and Gretel, Tristan and Isolde, or Tango and Bravo.

Frequently asked questions

What are some cool names for a German Shepherd?

For a German sound, try Falko, Hagen, Wolfram, Kuno or Siegfried. Working-dog names such as Sentinel, Justice, Pathfinder and Recon fit the breed's police and search history. Obsidian, Dauntless, Lionheart and Donner, the German word for thunder, are strong picks too.

What are cool female German Shepherd names?

German given names lead the list for females: Liesel, Frieda, Isolde, Lorelei, Thea, Svenja and Romy. For a working-dog feel, Justice, Liberty, Haven and Victory suit a female well. Königin, the German word for queen, and Leading Lady are there for a dog with presence.

Which German words make good German Shepherd names?

Short words with a clear meaning work best. The list includes Bär (bear), Stern (star), Fuchs (fox), Held (hero), Treu (loyal), Mutig (brave), Schatten (shadow) and Donner (thunder). Schatzi and Liebling are everyday German terms of endearment.

Is an Alsatian the same as a German Shepherd?

Yes. Alsatian is the name the breed was given in Britain around the First World War, and many people there still use it. It is the same dog, so every name in this list suits an Alsatian as well.
