Generate names for beggars in fantasy, medieval and Victorian fiction: the pitch holder at the temple steps, the street informant, the beggar king and his guild. Expect names such as Old Hob of the Bridge, Mumbling Meg, Penny Wat and Sister Alms.

About beggar names

A beggar in fiction rarely has a surname. The street gives a plain first name, usually a pet form like Hob, Wat or Meg, and adds the one thing everybody knows about its owner: the pitch (Old Hob of the Bridge), a habit (Mumbling Meg), what is carried or worn (Tin Cup Tolly, Mother Rags) or the life that came before (Sergeant Halfpay, Clerk Quill-less). A pitch name is the most useful for a game master, because it tells the players where to find the character again.

The list covers three kinds of setting. Medieval and fantasy names follow that byname pattern, with holy mendicants, pilgrims and bedesmen beside them and a few continental bynames such as Jehan le Gueux and Jörg Barfuss. Guild names borrow the mock court of the beggar king, with titles like The Duke of the Alley and Chancellor Clack-Dish, and the ranks found in Elizabethan rogue pamphlets: the upright man, the palliard, the jarkman, the patrico. Victorian names take a London street or a street trade, like the crossing sweepers, mudlarks and patterers Henry Mayhew described.

Period epithets for age and ailment (Blind, Lame, One-Leg) appear sparingly and plainly. Child beggars are a small share, and a few well-known beggars from fiction and scripture are included as reference points; the FAQ lists them.

How to choose beggar names

  • Name the pitch first. A beggar who is always at the same gate, bridge or church porch is a landmark, so Maud of the Temple Steps or Batt at the Buttercross gives players a place to come back to.
  • Use the old trade to hint at a backstory without telling it: Sergeant Halfpay, Captain No-Ship and Master Inkstain each carry a question the players may want to ask.
  • For a beggars' guild, give the leaders mock titles and the rank and file plain street names. The Duke of the Alley and Treasurer Tuppence read as a court; Scrap, Dregs and Whisper read as its eyes and ears.
  • Treat ailment and age epithets as plain description, the way a period source would, and let the character be more than the epithet: Blind Tam the Piper is a piper first.
  • Shorten the name in dialogue. Neighbors say 'Old Hob' or 'the piper'; the full name with its pitch is how the watch or a stranger would ask for him.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a beggar in a fantasy or medieval setting?

Pair a short given name with a pitch, a habit or a possession: Old Hob of the Bridge, Mumbling Meg, Penny Wat, Crutch Aldous, Tin Cup Tolly, Ned Halfloaf. For a holy mendicant try Sister Alms, Brother Bowl or Palmer Giles, and for a fantasy city try Vessa of the Moon Temple Steps or Ashgate Orrin.

Which names on the list come from books?

A small share. Foul Ole Ron, Coffin Henry, The Duck Man, Arnold Sideways and Altogether Andrews are the Canting Crew of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. Blind Pew is from Treasure Island, Edie Ochiltree from Walter Scott's The Antiquary, Hugh Boone from a Sherlock Holmes story, Clopin Trouillefou from The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Hong Qigong from Jin Yong's novels and Irus from the Odyssey, while Lazarus and Bartimaeus are from the New Testament. The rest are not meant to be any existing character, though a short street name can always match one somewhere by chance, and this site has no connection with those authors or their publishers.

How do I name a beggar king and his guild?

Give the head of the guild a mock royal or church title and let the officers echo a real court. The list has The Duke of the Alley, The Abbot of Alms, Queen of the Culverts and Chancellor Clack-Dish, plus cant ranks from Elizabethan rogue pamphlets such as The Upright Man of Eastgate and Palliard Pym. Ordinary members keep plain street names, which makes the titles stand out.

Are there names in the style of Terry Pratchett's beggars?

Yes. Besides the five members of the Canting Crew, one group of new names follows the same comic pattern of an ordinary first name with an odd qualifier, such as Nevertheless Norris, Arthur Lengthways, Kettle Hubert and The Spoon Woman. They follow that spirit and are not taken from the books.
