NPC Name Generator

The best NPC names are ones a game master can say once and the table remembers. That means short, pronounceable, and distinct from every other name already in play. A baker called Edda Thornwick or a guard captain called Harlow sticks; a string of apostrophes does not. Good NPC naming also signals social station at a glance: commoners get plain given names and trade or place surnames (Hob Tanner, Nell Cobbler, Perrin Oakhollow), gentry get longer polished ones (Lucius Pemberton, Seraphine Aldous), and street-level characters often have only a nickname or a single word (One-Eyed Marlow, Sixpence, Rook).

This list is built for improvisation. Most entries are grounded, vaguely English-medieval human names that suit a default fantasy setting, mixed with a spread of other backgrounds so a port town feels cosmopolitan. There are also race-flavoured blocks for dwarves, elves, halflings, gnomes, half-orcs, tieflings and dragonborn, and a run of title-plus-name entries (Sister Cerys, Constable Pruett, Innkeeper Mabel) you can drop straight into a scene. Grab one when a player asks the unnamed shopkeeper what she is called, and write it down so she can come back later.
