Generate fantasy newspaper names for the broadsheets, gazettes and scandal sheets of an invented city: mastheads like The Lantern Street Crier, The Tidewater Intelligencer and The Honest Raven, guild circulars like The Guildsman's Weekly, and motto titles like Quill and Candle.

About fantasy newspaper names

A fantasy newspaper is named in two halves: who or where it speaks for, and what kind of paper it is. The second half does most of the period work. Crier, Courier, Gazette, Herald, Chronicle, Mercury, Courant, Intelligencer and Broadside all sound older than Times or News, and several of them were common in real newspaper titles of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Put an invented street, gate or district in front and you have a city paper: The Lantern Street Crier, The Tidewater Intelligencer, The Harrowmere Herald.

The 1,000 mastheads here come from many kinds of publisher, all mixed together. There are city broadsheets, crown and court gazettes, guild and trade circulars, mage-academy journals and almanacs, temple bulletins, scandal sheets and penny dreadfuls, harbor and market price lists, rebel pamphlets, criers' rolls and notice boards, country almanacs, frontier dispatches and playhouse bills, plus papers for dwarven halls, elven courts, halfling villages and stranger readers.

Not every title follows the same pattern. Some read like a painted sign (The Honest Raven, The Scrying Glass), some like a motto (Quill and Candle, Told True, Told First), and some are a single blunt word (The Unbowed, The Tinderbox). The place names inside the mastheads are invented, so swap in the towns of your own setting.

How to choose fantasy newspaper names

  • Let the paper word say who is behind it. Gazette, Register and Circular carry the voice of authority and suit a crown or a guild; Crier, Broadside and Tattler belong to the street; Almanac, Journal and Proceedings suit scholars and mages.
  • Treat the place names as placeholders. The Harrowmere Herald becomes your city's paper as soon as you put your own town, ward or street in front of Herald.
  • Give one city rival papers: an establishment sheet such as The Regent's Register, a gossip sheet such as The Whisper Alley Tattler and an underground one such as The Cellar Press. Three accounts of the same event make better handouts than one.
  • Decide how the news travels before you choose. Where few people read, a crier's roll or a notice board (The Crier's Roll, The Bounty Board) fits better than a daily broadsheet.
  • Say the title the way a street seller would shout it. If it is a mouthful, pick a shorter one or give the paper a nickname the locals use.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a fantasy newspaper?

For a city paper try The Lantern Street Crier, The Griffon Gate Courier or The Tidewater Intelligencer. For something with more character, sign-style and motto titles such as The Honest Raven, The Scrying Glass and Quill and Candle work well, and The Guildsman's Weekly or The Harbormaster's List suit a paper with a narrow trade readership.

What should I call a newspaper in a D&D campaign?

Start with who prints it. A paper loyal to the rulers might be The Regent's Register, a mage college might issue The Arcanum Quarterly, and adventurers might read The Borderlands Dispatch or check The Bounty Board. A named paper is a handy way to deliver rumors and quest hooks, and a second, less reliable paper lets you plant false leads.

Are these newspapers from books, films or games?

No. They are original mastheads written in the style of fantasy settings, and the place names in them are invented. Famous papers from fiction, such as the Daily Prophet or the Ankh-Morpork Times, belong to their own worlds and are left out. A title here could still match a real or fictional paper by coincidence, so search for it before you publish.

Which words sound right for an old-fashioned paper?

Gazette, Courant, Mercury, Intelligencer, Post and Chronicle all have a long history in real newspaper titles, so they read as period without sounding made up. Crier, Broadside and Tidings push a title further toward the medieval, as in The Midnight Broadside or The Wild Road Crier. Words tied to later technology are best avoided in a setting without it.
