Generate Darkest Dungeon names in the game's grim medieval register: single-word hero names like Reynauld, Dismas and Junia, full names with bleak English surnames, epithets for veterans, and estate names for your save file. Built for Darkest Dungeon 1 and 2.

About darkest dungeon names

Darkest Dungeon names its heroes with a single old-world given name and nothing else. The default roster tells you the register immediately: Reynauld the Crusader, Dismas the Highwayman, Paracelsus the Plague Doctor, Junia the Vestal, Baldwin the Leper, Barristan the Man-at-Arms, Alhazred the Occultist. Red Hook pulled from medieval England and France (Geoffrey, Osbert, Matilda, Hawise), from Latin and German (Ignatius, Sigismund, Hildegard), and from history and literature for the more exotic classes: Boudica for the Hellion, Paracelsus for the doctor, Alhazred for the scholar of forbidden books. The random name pool that fills your Stage Coach follows the same rule, which is why a hero called Brad or Jessica breaks the mood instantly.

This generator keeps to that convention. Most entries are single names you can drop straight into the rename box, split between Norman and Saxon men's names, medieval women's names, alchemists and Hellion-style warrior women, and the desert names that suit a Shieldbreaker. There are also full names with bleak English surnames for players who like surnames on their roster, a handful of earned epithets for heroes who survived the Darkest Dungeon itself, and estate names for the Ancestor's crumbling holdings when you start a new campaign.

Choose something that sounds right read aloud by the Narrator over a torch guttering in the Ruins.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the class fantasy: churchy Latin names (Benedict, Perpetua) for Vestals and Crusaders, scholarly names (Agrippa, Zosimos) for Occultists and Plague Doctors, rough Saxon names (Wulfric, Eadric) for Hellions and Bounty Hunters.
  • Stick to one name. The game only shows a first name on the roster and in combat text, so a long full name gets cut off; save the surname or epithet for the hero's biography or your own notes.
  • If you run themed parties, name them as a set: four Norman names for a Crusader-heavy squad, four Celtic names for an all-Hellion run. It makes losses sting more, which is rather the point.
  • For the estate name at the start of a campaign, pick a two-syllable place name with a dark English ending (Gravenmoor, Ravenscar) so it reads naturally in the Narrator's lines about your family's legacy.
  • Avoid modern names and jokes unless you are streaming and want the contrast; the game's writing is unrelentingly grim, and a hero called Steve becomes the only thing anyone notices.

Frequently asked questions

What are the default hero names in Darkest Dungeon?

The starting Crusader is Reynauld and the starting Highwayman is Dismas. Other class defaults and tutorial heroes include Paracelsus (Plague Doctor), Junia (Vestal), Audrey (Grave Robber), Barristan (Man-at-Arms), Boudica (Hellion), Bigby (Abomination), Alhazred (Occultist), Baldwin (Leper), Damian (Flagellant), Sarmenti (Jester), Tardif (Bounty Hunter), William (Houndmaster), Missandei (Arbalest), Amani (Shieldbreaker) and Josephine (Antiquarian).

Can I rename heroes in Darkest Dungeon?

Yes. In the first game, click a hero's name on the roster panel to edit it at any time. In Darkest Dungeon 2 you can rename heroes at the Crossroads before setting out. Names in this generator are kept short so they fit the rename field and the combat log.

What kind of names fit the Darkest Dungeon setting?

Medieval and early-modern European names work best: Norman French, Old English, Latin and German given names of the sort found on 14th-century tax rolls. Greek and Arabic names suit scholars, Celtic and Norse names suit Hellions, and plain single names beat elaborate fantasy constructions every time.

Does this work for Darkest Dungeon 2 as well?

Yes. Darkest Dungeon 2 keeps the same naming style for its heroes (Bonnie the Runaway, Sasha the Duelist, and the returning Reynauld, Dismas and Audrey), so every name here fits either game. The estate names are aimed at the first game's Hamlet and save slots.
