Barovian Name Generator

Barovia is the mist-shrouded valley at the heart of Curse of Strahd and the original Ravenloft, and its people have a distinct naming style that borrows from Romanian, Russian, Hungarian, and broader Slavic sources without belonging to any one of them. The adventure itself gives a canonical list: male names like Alek, Frederich, Ivan, Radu, Zsolt; female names like Danya, Elisabeta, Minodora, Ruxandra; and surnames like Voltanescu, Krezkov, Dilisnya, and Petrovich. Mixing a Hungarian first name with a Russian surname is not a mistake, it is the house style.

Two details make Barovian names feel right. First, patronymics: sons take -ovich or -ovic (Ismark Kolyanovich, son of Kolyan) and daughters take -ovna or -evna (Ireena Kolyana, Lydia Petrovna), so a family's history is audible in its names. Second, Barovians are peasants living under a vampire, so most NPCs are best identified by trade, village, or misfortune: Krystofor the Gravedigger, Vasha the Wolf-Widow, Anca of Barovia Village. Nobility is thin and hereditary (the Vallakoviches, Wachters, Krezkovs, and Dilisnyas), and everyone knows which house a surname belongs to.

The list follows those rules and adds a handful of the module's own NPCs for reference, so a DM can improvise a Vallaki shopkeeper or a Krezk gate guard in seconds, and a player can build a native Barovian character who sounds like they belong in the valley.
