Generate axe beak names for D&D and other tabletop games: blade names like Cleaver and Chiselbeak, mount names like Dust Runner and Farstride, war titles like Iron Matron, and farmyard names like Gertrude and Mabel for a hand-reared chick.

About axe beak names

An axe beak is a tall, flightless, bad-tempered bird with a heavy wedge-shaped beak, and in D&D and other tabletop games it does three jobs: a mount, a ranger's or druid's companion, and a pack or sled animal in cold-country campaigns. A war mount carries a name the enemy line would remember, such as Shieldbreaker, Iron Matron or Old Splitbeak. A bird raised from the egg tends to keep its chick name, Button or Pebble, long after it can look its rider in the eye.

The list draws on what the animal is. Axe and tool words (Cleaver, Bardiche, Froe) fit the beak; compounds built on beak, bill, crest and talon pick one bird out of a flock; stride names such as Dust Runner and Farstride suit a mount; plumage, tundra and badlands names say where it was caught. Plain farmyard names, Gertrude or Mabel, work because of the contrast with a bird taller than its rider.

There are also names a halfling or gnome rider might choose, mock titles like Lady Peckington, and matched pairs such as Hack & Slash and Flint & Tinder for a sled team. Most are one or two words, easy to call across a table. All 1,000 are pet and mount names for your own table, and none is presented as official.

How to choose axe beak names

  • Match the name to the bird's job: a stride name such as Farstride or League Eater for a mount, a blade name for a guard bird, a soft chick name for a companion raised from the egg.
  • Say it out loud before you commit. A name you shout in the middle of a fight should be one or two syllables, or shorten to that: Old Splitbeak becomes Split.
  • For a sled team or a flock, name the birds as a set. Pairs such as Frost & Thaw or Hammer & Tongs tell the table at once which two run together.
  • Give a game master's cavalry bird a title the other side would use (Shieldbreaker, Red Widow) and let its rider call it something plainer in camp.
  • A plain human name such as Gertrude, Mabel or Wilbur is the quickest way to make a dangerous animal the party's favorite.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for an axe beak mount?

Names about speed and ground covered suit a ridden bird: Dust Runner, Farstride, Quickshank and Outrunner are all in the list. For a war mount, try a title such as Shieldbreaker or Iron Matron instead.

Are these official axe beak names from D&D or Pathfinder?

No. These are pet and mount names for players and game masters to use at their own table. They are not official names from any rulebook or published adventure, and this page is an unofficial fan resource.

What should I name an axe beak chick?

Small, soft names work well and get funnier as the bird grows: Button, Pebble, Sprout, Fuzzbutton or Little Hatchet. Plain farmyard names like Gertrude and Mabel do the same job played straight.

How do I name a team of sled or pack axe beaks?

Use matched pairs so the birds that run side by side are easy to tell apart: Hack & Slash, Flint & Tinder, Sleet & Hail. The list also has group names such as The Kindling Crew and Splinter Squad for a whole flock.
