Chocobo Name Generator

Chocobos have carried Final Fantasy heroes since 1988, and over that time a whole naming culture has grown up around the big yellow birds. The starting point is the sound they make: "Kweh!" (or "Wark!" in older localizations), which is why so many player-named chocobos end up as Kweh, Warkles, Kwehnifer or Sir Warksalot. Boko, the very first named chocobo from Final Fantasy V, remains the classic choice, followed by Choco from FFVII, Chocolina from FFXIII-2, and the legendary black racing bird Teioh from the Gold Saucer.

The second tradition is plumage. Standard chocobos are golden yellow, so names like Nugget, Buttercup, Marigold, Saffron and Goldie are everywhere. Colored breeds add their own vocabulary: blue river chocobos, green mountain chocobos, black chocobos that can cross anything, and the coveted gold chocobo of FFVII. FFXIV players dye their birds with Sylkis and Curiel greens, so shades like Cerulean or Onyx work as names, and the greens themselves (Gysahl, Krakka, Mimett) double as cute food names.

A good chocobo name is short enough to shout across the Chocobo Farm, fits the bird's color or personality, and ideally nods to the series. Racing chocobos suit speed names like Fleetfoot or Photo Finish, plush and pet chocobos suit food names, and summon-inspired names like Ifrit or Bahamut are a fun mismatch for a bird that mostly says kweh.
