Autobot Name Generator

Autobot names are one or two English words fused into a single punchy label that says what the robot turns into, what it does, or how it acts. Look at the original 1984 lineup: Ironhide (tough), Ratchet (medic), Prowl (police car), Wheeljack (inventor), Sideswipe and Sunstreaker (flashy sports cars), Cliffjumper, Bluestreak, Trailbreaker, Hound. Aerialbots and Protectobots take flight and rescue words (Air Raid, Skydive, First Aid, Hot Spot), Dinobots get single blunt words (Grimlock, Slag, Sludge, Swoop), and leaders carry the honorific Prime after a strong root: Optimus, Rodimus, Sentinel, Zeta.

Autobot names are also warmer than Decepticon names. Decepticons choose threatening compounds (Starscream, Shockwave, Soundwave, Megatron), while Autobots favor speed, tools, weather, and everyday car parts: Gears, Brawn, Huffer, Tracks, Hoist, Skids, Tailgate, Hubcap, Swerve. Even the aggressive ones sound like protectors (Warpath, Roadbuster, Red Alert). Female Autobots such as Arcee, Elita One, Chromia, and Windblade tend toward smoother sounds with a science-fiction feel.

The list above pairs the canon Autobots from Generation 1 through Prime with original names built on those rules: a vehicle or mechanical root (Axle, Torque, Girder, Piston), a heroic action word (Strike, Guard, Runner, Breaker), and a few medic and communications names for the support roles every Autobot team needs.
