Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic in the Spirit of St. Louis, Amelia Earhart flew a Lockheed Vega she simply called "Old Bessie," and the B-29 that dropped the first atomic bomb was named Enola Gay after the pilot's mother. In the Second World War, bomber and fighter crews painted names like Memphis Belle, Glamorous Glennis and Shoo Shoo Baby on the nose, usually a girlfriend, a hometown or a running joke, in bold script beside a cartoon.

Modern names follow a few reliable patterns. "Spirit of" plus a place still works for anything meant to sound historic or aspirational. Airlines name flagship jets after cities, rivers or explorers (KLM's Boeing 747s were named after cities, Virgin Atlantic's after women: Ruby Tuesday, Tubular Belle). Fighter and test pilots lean on short punchy callsigns, while general-aviation owners tend toward affectionate nicknames for a Cessna or Piper: Betsy, the Blue Goose, Miss Behavin'.

A good airplane name should sound right when shouted across a hangar and look right in nine-inch letters under the cockpit. Two or three syllables, a hard consonant somewhere, and either a personal connection or a bit of swagger.
