About aircraft carrier names
Aircraft carriers are the largest warships afloat, and navies name them accordingly. The United States has cycled through three conventions: famous battles (Midway, Coral Sea, Bunker Hill), historic ships inherited from the age of sail (Enterprise, Lexington, Saratoga, Hornet, Wasp), and since the Nimitz class, presidents and naval patrons such as Carl Vinson and John C. Stennis. Wartime escort carriers took the names of bays and sounds (Gambier Bay, Liscome Bay), which is why so many small carriers sound like coastal charts.
The Royal Navy prefers grand adjectives and nouns, often beginning with a hard I: Illustrious, Indomitable, Implacable, Invincible, Ark Royal, Eagle, Hermes. Lend-Lease escort carriers were named for fighters and rulers (Chaser, Striker, Emperor, Khedive). The Imperial Japanese Navy used poetic compounds built from dragons, cranes and phoenixes (Hiryu means flying dragon, Zuikaku auspicious crane, Taiho great phoenix), while France, Russia and China lean on statesmen, admirals and provinces: Charles de Gaulle, Admiral Kuznetsov, Liaoning.
For an original fleet, pick one convention and stay inside it. A carrier called USS Kings Mountain fits a navy that names ships for battles; Seiryu fits one that names them for mythical beasts; a single word like Thunderhead or Invictus suits a science-fiction or alternate-history navy that wants to feel unmoored from any real country.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the prefix to the navy: USS for the United States, HMS for Britain, JS for modern Japan, INS for India, HMAS for Australia. A prefix on the wrong navy's name style reads as a mistake.
- For an American-style fictional carrier, choose a battle the navy would be proud of or a historic ship name with a long lineage (Enterprise has been used nine times) rather than a random city.
- Give Royal Navy-style carriers a single proud adjective (Indomitable, Resolute, Relentless) and avoid numbers or compound words.
- Japanese-style names work best as a two-part compound with a clear meaning, like Kinryu (golden dragon) or Hakuho (white phoenix); keep the romanization simple.
- Name the carrier's air wing and escort destroyers to echo the flagship, for example a carrier Kestrel with squadrons called the Kestrel's Talons, so the battle group feels like a unit.

How does the US Navy name aircraft carriers?
Modern US supercarriers are almost all named for presidents (Nimitz is the exception, a fleet admiral) and long-serving members of Congress who championed the Navy. Earlier carriers took the names of Revolutionary War and War of 1812 battles and of historic ships like Enterprise and Lexington. USS Doris Miller, named for an enlisted hero of Pearl Harbor, broke the pattern in 2020.
What are good names for a fictional aircraft carrier?

Most Imperial Japanese carriers were named after flying creatures and mythical beasts: Hiryu (flying dragon), Soryu (blue dragon), Shokaku (soaring crane), Zuikaku (auspicious crane), Taiho (great phoenix) and Hosho (phoenix in flight). Akagi and Kaga were exceptions, named for a mountain and a province because they began life as a cruiser and a battleship.
