Plane Name Generator

Aircraft names come from two very different traditions. Manufacturers and air forces assign type names that follow themes: Grumman's fighting cats (Wildcat, Hellcat, Tomcat), Piper's Native American nations (Cherokee, Comanche, Navajo), and Boeing's Stratocruiser and Stratofortress family. Individual airframes then pick up their own nicknames from the people who fly them, and that is where the real color lives.

The golden age of individual aircraft names was WWII nose art. Crews painted names like Memphis Belle, Shoo Shoo Baby, and Nine-O-Nine on B-17s and B-24s, usually a girlfriend's name, a pun, a song title, or a wry comment on their odds (Borrowed Time, Nine Lives). Record setters got dignified names like Spirit of St. Louis and Winnie Mae, and test pilots named their mounts after their wives, most famously Chuck Yeager's Glamorous Glennis. Bush pilots lean toward affectionate, beat-up names like Tundra Tramp.

A good plane name is short enough to paint on a cowling, easy to say over the radio, and matches the aircraft's personality. A yellow Piper Cub wants something like Sky Baby; a Mustang wants Old Crow or Cripes A'Mighty; a stealthy jet wants a single hard word like Nighthawk.
