Nen Ability Name Generator
Hatsu names for all six Nen types
Nen ability names for Hunter x Hunter original characters: a short block of Hatsu from the series, each marked with its user, such as Bungee Gum (Hisoka), and new abilities in the same playful everyday English, such as Taffy Pull, Thirteenth Key, Pinky Promise and Button-Eyed Bear.
About Nen ability names
A Hatsu is the personal ability a Nen user builds in Hunter x Hunter, and its name is part of the design. Togashi usually gives an ability a short English phrase, often two words, taken from everyday life and a little playful: Bungee Gum, Chain Jail, Little Flower, Smoky Jail, Order Stamp. The name says what the power is like, not how strong it is.
Forty-eight entries are abilities from the series, in one common English rendering each, and every one carries its user in parentheses, as in Emperor Time (Kurapika). They are anchors for the style and not a full catalogue. Everything else is new. The new names follow the six Nen types: blunt physical names for Enhancers (Knuckle Sandwich), a substance or property with a joke in it for Transmuters (Taffy Pull), shots and deliveries for Emitters (Postcard Bullet), an object that implies a rule for Conjurers (Thirteenth Key), orders, puppets and phones for Manipulators (Speed Dial), and books, fortunes and borrowed skills for Specialists (Secondhand Talent). Some carry the type in square brackets.
The rest are Nen beasts and guardian spirits (Button-Eyed Bear), personas in the manner of Doctor Blythe (Nurse Peppermint), names built on a vow or a limitation (Pinky Promise) and joint abilities for two users (Needle and Thread).
How to choose Nen ability names
- Start from an everyday thing, not from the power. A snack, a school rule, a piece of stationery or a playground game gives a name such as Hot Potato, Permission Slip or Red Pen, and the ability can be designed backward from it.
- Let the name hint at the rule. Overdue Notice suggests a penalty that arrives late and Thirty-Day Warranty suggests a power with a time limit, which suits a conjured object that comes with a condition.
- Match the tone to the Nen type: Enhancer names are blunt and physical, Transmuter names describe a texture or a temperature, and Manipulator names give an order.
- A vow name is strongest when it states the restriction in plain words. One Shot Only, Never on a Tuesday and Left Hand Only tell a reader the cost before the fight starts.
- Keep it short. Two or three words is the usual length in the series, and a name that fits in one speech bubble is easier to shout.
Frequently asked questions
Which names on this page are from Hunter x Hunter?
The entries with a character's name in parentheses, such as Bungee Gum (Hisoka), Godspeed (Killua), Skill Hunter (Chrollo) and Doctor Blythe (Neferpitou). There are forty-eight of them, each in one common English rendering, and translations differ between editions. They are a reference block, not a full catalogue of the series. Every entry without a user is new and written for this fan page, which has no link to the author or the publisher.
How are Nen abilities named in the series?
Most have a short English name, often two words, drawn from ordinary things such as a gum, a flower, a stamp or a children's game. Chain Jail, Little Flower, Order Stamp and Hide and Seek all sound harmless, and the contrast with what the ability does is part of the style. The new names here keep to that habit, as in Wet Cement, Piggy Bank Heist and Wrong Number.
What do the square brackets mean?
A bracket gives the Nen type a new name was written for, as in Cannonball Dive [Enhancer] or Sugar Glass [Transmuter]. It is a suggestion for an original character and appears on new entries only. Nothing stops you from giving a bracketed name to a user of another type, since a user in the series can learn abilities outside their own type at lower efficiency.
How do I name an ability with a vow or a limitation?
Put the condition into the name. Pinky Promise, Midnight Deadline, Rainy Days Only and Security Deposit each say what the user has agreed to give up or when the power works. In the series a stricter condition makes an ability stronger, so the name can double as a warning.
