About winter last names

The winter last names in this list come from two sources, real surnames and names coined for fiction, and the list mixes them without labels, so it helps to know which is which. About a quarter of the list is real surnames. English gives Frost, Snow, Winter, Winterbourne (a stream that runs only in winter), Midwinter, Snowden, Coldwell, Hailstone and Yule. Other languages do the same with their own words: Schnee is German for snow, Kaltenbach is cold brook, Morozov comes from the Russian word for frost, Zima is winter in Polish and Czech, Talvela comes from the Finnish word for winter, Hideg is Hungarian for cold, Inverno is Italian for winter and Nieves is Spanish for snows.

The larger part is coined for fiction. Most of these winter surnames join a cold word (frost, snow, rime, hoar, sleet, thaw) to an old English place-name ending such as -by, -combe, -croft, -thwaite, -gill or -holt: Snowcroft, Hoarfield, Sleetby, Rimegill. They read as surnames, but they are inventions, and a few may also exist as rare surnames or place names.

Three smaller groups finish the list: house names for northern fantasy realms (Rimegard, Vinterholm, Kaldfell), soft and cozy names (Hearthwell, Hollyfield, Emberley) and stark ones (Graywinter, Coldgrave, Blackice).

How to choose winter last names

  • For a story set in our world, start with the real surnames and match the language to the character: Winterbourne or Snowden for an English family, Vinterberg for a Danish one, Mrozek for a Polish one, Yukimura for a Japanese one.
  • The names keep their original letters, as in Mróz, Mráz, Studený, Kühl and Frías. Where a form or a game will not take them, use the usual plain spelling: Mroz, Mraz, Studeny, Kuehl, Frias.
  • Give one fantasy region one family of endings. Snowgill, Coldrigg and Frostkeld sound like neighbors in the same hills, while Rimegard, Vinterholm and Hrimfell belong further north.
  • Balance the first name. A short surname such as Frost, Snow or Kalt can carry a long first name, and a long one such as Winterschladen or Hoarthwaite wants a short name in front of it.
  • Let the surname set the mood before the character speaks. Hearthwell and Emberley are warm people in a cold place, and Bleakwinter and Coldgrave are not.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real last names?

About a quarter are. Frost, Snow, Winters, Winterbottom, Snowball, Blizzard, Schneeberger, De Winter, Vinter, Pakkanen, Moroz, Havas and Nevado are all family names that people carry. The rest, such as Snowcroft, Frostthwaite and Winterhowe, are coined for fiction and games, most in the style of English surnames and a few on Norse-sounding parts. We have not checked whether any of the coined ones also exists somewhere as a rare surname.

Which real surnames mean winter, snow or frost?

Winter itself is a surname in English and German, and Vinter is the same word in Danish and Swedish. Zima is winter in Polish and Czech, Inverno is winter in Italian, and Talvela comes from talvi, the Finnish word for winter. For snow there are Schnee in German and Nieves and Neves, Spanish and Portuguese for snows. For frost there are Mróz in Polish, Mráz in Czech, Moroz in Ukrainian and Ayaz in Turkish.

Which names suit a fantasy house or a northern clan?

Try the house names built on Norse-sounding parts, such as Rimegard, Vinterholm, Kaldfell, Hrimvald and Vetrgard, or the plainer march and fell names such as Snowmarch and Hoarfell. They are coined from old northern word parts, and we have not checked them against any book or game, so search a name before you build a world on it. For a softer family, look at Hearthwell, Inglecroft or Fairwinter.

Can I use a winter surname as a pen name?

Yes. Short ones such as Frost, Snow, Winters and Yule are easy to spell and remember, which is most of what a pen name needs. Search the full name before you settle on it, because a common surname may already belong to a writer in your field.
