Generate White Scars names for Warhammer 40,000 in the steppe style of Chogoris: single names like Arghan and Tuzhak, captains such as Narghai Khan, Stormseers, Brotherhoods like the Brotherhood of the Long Grass, and names for bikes, hunting birds and blades.

About White Scars names

The White Scars of Warhammer 40,000 recruit from the steppe tribes of Chogoris and keep the names they rode in with. Characters from the setting show the sound: Jaghatai Khan, Kor'sarro Khan, Targutai Yesugei, Shiban, Torghun, Qin Xa. It is an invented style that borrows its feel from Mongolian and Turkic names, with kh, gh, q and zh sounds and endings such as -ai, -un and -ar. None of it is meant as a real Mongolian name, and no meanings are claimed.

Rank changes the name. A captain is a Khan and carries the title after his name, as in Narghai Khan; it is not a surname, so battle-brothers do not use it. Librarians are Stormseers, and a company is a Brotherhood, like the Brotherhood of the Storm. In the Horus Heresy era the Legion's senior commanders were Noyan-Khans, and the Primarch's bodyguard was the keshig.

Most of the list is single names and two-part names for the brothers of a squad. The rest covers Khans, Stormseers with sky and weather epithets, riders with epithets of speed, Brotherhood names, Heresy-era legionaries, names for a bike, a hunting bird or a favored blade, and names for a successor Chapter of your own. This is a fan resource with no connection to Games Workshop.

How to choose White Scars names

  • Put Khan after the name and only on a captain: Narghai Khan, not Khan Narghai. Give the rest of the squad plain names, which is how the setting does it.
  • Use a single name for most battle-brothers and keep two-part names, such as Atukh Ulgem, for characters who need to be told apart on a roster.
  • Give one epithet to a rider who has earned it. Speed, hawks, wind and lightning are the Chapter's images: Baighur the Swift, Dalqai Storm-Rider.
  • Name the company too. A Brotherhood name such as Brotherhood of the Long Grass or Brotherhood of the Red Dawn ties a bike squad and its Khan together on the table.
  • For a Horus Heresy force, use Noyan-Khan for the senior commanders and mark the Primarch's guard with 'of the Keshig'.

Frequently asked questions

What do White Scars names sound like?

Short and hard-edged, in an invented steppe style: Shiban, Torghun, Jubal, Targutai Yesugei. New names in the same mold, such as Arghan, Uzghar and Tuzhak, lean on kh, gh, q and zh sounds. The style is inspired by Mongolian and Turkic names, but the new names are invented and are not meant as real names from either tradition.

Is Khan a surname?

No. Among the White Scars, Khan is the title of a company captain and follows the name, as in Kor'sarro Khan. The Chapter Master is the Great Khan, which is why Jubal Khan and the Primarch Jaghatai Khan carry it too. In this list only those two and the captains carry it, and Noyan-Khan is kept for senior commanders of the Horus Heresy era.

What is a Stormseer?

Stormseer is the White Scars' name for a Librarian, a psyker who calls on wind and lightning. The list gives them the title or a sky epithet, as in Stormseer Meghtar or Ghurzai the Sky-Reader.

Which names come from Warhammer itself?

A small share: Jaghatai Khan, Kor'sarro Khan, Jubal Khan, Targutai Yesugei, Shiban, Torghun, Qin Xa and the Noyan-Khans Jemulan and Hasik, plus the Brotherhood of the Storm and the Brotherhood of the Moon. Those belong to Games Workshop, so keep them to hobby and fan projects. The rest are written in the same style, including bike, bird and blade names such as Stormhoof, Skyfang and Windcut; a plain Brotherhood name may happen to match one from the books.
