Generate Walking Dead names for fan fiction, roleplay and tabletop campaigns: everyday survivors like Earl Pruitt and Celeste Boudreaux, earned nicknames like Doc Hargrove and Shotgun Peggy, communities like Magnolia Commons Safe-Zone and The Cannery, and hostile groups like The Reckoners and The Tollmen.

About Walking dead names

The Walking Dead never gave its survivors wasteland handles. Its characters keep the names they had before the outbreak: a sheriff's deputy, a pizza delivery driver, a farmer and his daughters. The story starts in Georgia and later moves to Virginia, and this list follows that register. The survivor names are ordinary full names with a Southern lean, such as Earl Pruitt, Wade Tidwell, Celeste Boudreaux and Tammy Jo Rutledge.

Nicknames in the show are earned, usually from a job or a habit, the way one leader is simply the Governor. The list does the same with Doc Hargrove, Coach Brannigan, Shotgun Peggy, Ham Radio Hank and titles such as The Beekeeper and The Auctioneer. Communities take plain names from whatever was standing when the walls went up, so the invented ones are places like Magnolia Commons Safe-Zone, The Cannery, Coldwater Dam and Camp Whippoorwill, plus alliances such as the Three Rivers Compact.

Hostile groups get one collective word that says how they treat other people: the Saviors, the Whisperers, the Wolves. Invented ones include The Reckoners, The Tollmen, The Herdsmen and The Supper Club. Ten canon communities and groups and four of the show's words for the dead are included as anchors. The rest is invented, and the main cast's names are left out on purpose.

How to choose Walking dead names

  • Keep survivor names ordinary. Hank Dobbins or Loretta Causey sounds like someone who had a job and a mortgage before the outbreak, and that everyday quality is what makes the setting work.
  • Let nicknames come from the old job or a single incident. Doc Hargrove, Trooper Janes and Principal Waller carry a backstory in two words, while One-Eyed Walt and Unlucky Pete each promise a scene you can write later.
  • Name a community after what the building used to be. The Bottling Plant, Eastside High Shelter, Big Buck Lodge and Rest Stop Nine each tell players what the walls, rooms and supplies probably look like.
  • Pick a hostile group name that sounds reasonable from the inside. The Collectors, The Welcome Committee and The Fair Share all sound like people who believe they are the good guys, which is what makes them unsettling.
  • Decide what your group calls the dead. Different groups in the show use different words, so a camp that says Moaners or Porch Sitters instantly sounds like it has its own history.

Frequently asked questions

What are good Walking Dead character names?

Use plain full names that fit the Southern setting: Earl Pruitt, Travis Ledbetter, Remy Fontenot, Keisha Bankston, Marisol Treviño or Linh Tran. Double first names such as Roy Dean Satterfield and Georgia Mae Pennell add regional flavor without turning into a joke. Save nicknames for characters who have earned one in the story.

Which names in the list are from the show?

Fourteen entries are canon: Alexandria Safe-Zone, Hilltop Colony, The Kingdom, Oceanside, Woodbury, Terminus, The Sanctuary, The Commonwealth, The Saviors and The Whisperers, plus Walkers, Biters, Roamers and Lurkers as words for the dead. They are there as reference points for the style. Everything else is invented, and the main characters' names are left out on purpose, though an ordinary name can always match a minor character by coincidence.

How do I name a survivor community or safe zone?

Start with the site and keep it literal. The show's communities are named for a town, a house on a hill or a rail terminal, so names like Harlan's Mill, Union Terminal, The Fairgrounds and Cedar Bluff Colony fit right in. Larger networks can use a civic word such as Compact, League or Alliance, as in the Three Rivers Compact or The Piedmont League.

What makes a good name for a hostile group?

One collective noun, usually with The in front, that hints at the group's rules. The Tollmen charge for the road, The Herdsmen steer the dead, The Quiet Ones never speak on a raid and The Gracious Hosts are friendlier than anyone should be. A calm, almost polite name tends to be more unsettling than a bloodthirsty one.
