Southern American names have a sound that anyone from below the Mason-Dixon line recognizes instantly. The biggest tell is the double first name, used in full every time: Mary Beth, Billy Ray, Anna Grace, Jimmy Dale, Ella Mae. The first half is usually a Bible or family classic and the second a short tag like Mae, Lou, Beth, Sue, Ray, Dale, Lee or Jo. Another tell is the family surname used as a first name, which is why so many Southern men are called Tucker, Hollis, Brantley, Sutton or Beau and so many women Carolina, Savannah or Georgia.

Surnames mark the region. Lowcountry South Carolina and coastal Georgia families carry names like Ravenel, Pinckney, Manigault and Rutledge; Virginia and the Carolina Piedmont give Randolph, Fairfax, Culpepper and Hightower; Appalachia supplies Hatfield, Satterfield, Higginbotham and Ledbetter; Cajun and Creole Louisiana adds Boudreaux, Thibodeaux, Fontenot, Guidry and Broussard; and Texas mixes in Yarbrough, Stovall and Kimbrough. Old families also keep Beauregard, Calhoun and Rhett alive as given names.

Then there are the nicknames that often replace a legal name entirely: Bubba, Junior, Sonny, Skeeter, Dub, Hoss, Sissy, Birdie and Peaches.
