Wacky Name Generator

Wacky names run on rhythm. The reason Ziggy Zogsworth or Waffles McGee sound funny before you know anything about the character is that they use the same tricks as Dr. Seuss, Looney Tunes and Roald Dahl: bouncy trochaic stress (ZIG-gy ZOG-sworth), alliteration or internal rhyme, and consonants that pop or fizz (b, p, z, k, w). Add a suffix that pretends to be a real surname (-worth, -ington, -bottom, Mc-, Von) and you get a name that is simultaneously nonsense and oddly plausible, which is the sweet spot for cartoons and picture books.

Several recognizable formulas show up in this list. Nonsense-word plus surname suffix (Fizzwidget Von Doodlesnort). Adjective-plus-alliterative-first-name (Bonkers Boris, Dotty Dorothy), a staple of children's television. Reduplication (Boing Boing Bernard, Higgledy Piggledy Hilda), which almost always reads as silly. Food or object as a first name (Marmalade Muddlebottom, Kazoo Kaboodle). And the internet's own contribution, the McXface pattern that Boaty McBoatface made famous.

These names suit anything meant to be lovable rather than threatening: mascots, sidekicks, gnome and kobold NPCs, board-game pieces, improv characters, class pets and the villains in stories aimed at six-year-olds. For grim or grotesque characters, use an ugly name generator instead; wacky names are meant to make people grin.
