Visual kei names for bands and their members: ornate band names such as Le Jardin des Larmes, VELVET:REQUIEM and Gekka no Waltz, and one-word stage names such as Ayato, Ryo~ma and Shion (紫苑). The 500 names are split about evenly between band names and stage names.

About visual kei names

Visual kei is a Japanese music scene that took shape in the 1980s, defined less by one sound than by its look: elaborate costumes, makeup and hair. Band names share that taste for ornament. Bands borrow French, German and Latin for a gothic, aristocratic air, write English in odd capitals with a dagger, a tilde or a colon in the middle, or set a Japanese phrase in romaji. About half of this list is band names in those styles: Le Jardin des Larmes (the garden of tears), Tränen aus Glas (tears of glass), Stella Cadens (falling star), VELVET:REQUIEM and Gekka no Waltz (waltz beneath the moon). A smaller set suits the brighter oshare kei style (NEON MACARON CLUB) and the retro, Japanese-themed angura kei style (Showa Kaiki Gekijou).

The other half is stage names. Visual kei musicians usually go by a single name, credited beside their part as Vo., Gt., Ba. or Dr. The list has ordinary Japanese given names (Ayato, Kanata), stylized spellings in capitals, in lowercase or with a tilde for a long vowel (RENJI, sui, Ryo~ma), and word names shown with their kanji, such as Shion (紫苑), the aster flower, and Hisui (翡翠), jade.

Real bands often carry short phrases and dictionary words like these, so search for any name before you adopt it.

How to choose visual kei names

  • Pick the sub-style before the name. Dark, old-school kote kei bands suit the French, German and Latin phrases, oshare kei suits the bright stylized names, and angura kei suits the Japanese phrases in romaji.
  • Look up the meaning of a foreign phrase before you commit, and keep its accents. The É in Étoile Déchue and the ä in Tränen aus Glas are part of the spelling.
  • Symbols such as † and ≠ look right on a flyer but are hard to type. Decide on a plain spelling for search, tags and streaming services alongside the decorated one.
  • Give each member one name and make the lineup easy to tell apart. Ren and Rin in the same band will be mixed up, while Akatsuki, Sena and RAIZO will not.
  • For a word name, the kanji form works well on a logo and the romaji form is easier for fans outside Japan, so many acts use both.

Frequently asked questions

What does a visual kei band name look like?

Many are short foreign phrases with a dark or romantic meaning, such as "Valse des Ombres" (waltz of shadows) or "Silbernes Requiem" (silver requiem). Others are English words set in unusual capitals or joined by a symbol, like "Mad†Marionette" and "NiGHT ORCHiD". Japanese phrases written in romaji, such as "Yoru no Teien" (night garden), are just as common.

How do visual kei musicians choose stage names?

Most use a single name. It can be an ordinary given name, a stylized spelling of one, or a word with a strong image written in kanji. On this list "Akatsuki (暁)" means dawn and "Kohaku (琥珀)" means amber. The name is usually credited next to the part, as in Vo. for vocals or Gt. for guitar.

Are these the names of real bands or musicians?

They were drafted for this page and are not taken from a roster of real acts. That said, short phrases and ordinary given names are common in the scene, and nobody has compared this list with existing bands. Search for a name yourself before you use it.

How do I pronounce the symbols in a stylized name?

You do not. The dagger, tilde, colon and not-equal sign are decoration, so "ROSE≠THORN" is simply said as Rose Thorn and "Ash~and~Ivory" as Ash and Ivory. In a stage name such as Ryo~ma the tilde stands for a long vowel.
