Goth band names have a recognizable grammar that dates to the post-punk years. The first wave favored stark, art-school nouns (Bauhaus, Specimen, Xmal Deutschland), religious or funereal phrases (Sisters of Mercy, Christian Death, Fields of the Nephilim) and deliberately unsettling images (Alien Sex Fiend, Skeletal Family). Later darkwave and coldwave acts stripped it down to two cold words (Cold Cave, Drab Majesty, Soft Kill) or a single loaded noun, while ethereal and dreampop-leaning bands chose fragile, Romantic imagery. Deathrock keeps the horror-movie humor.

The vocabulary is consistent: cathedrals, crypts, candles, velvet, veils, saints, sisters, ghosts, winter, mirrors, orchids and anything Victorian or liturgical. What separates a good goth name from a parody is restraint and a little wit. One striking image beats three stacked adjectives, and a phrase that sounds like a line from a hymn, an epitaph or a Poe story will always out-goth a name that just says "dark" twice.

  • Check how it looks on a black T-shirt and a flyer. Names of one to three words in a serif or blackletter face read best; long names shrink to nothing.
