Vintage Name Generator

Vintage names are the ones that peaked between roughly 1880 and 1950, fell out of use for two generations, and now sound fresh again precisely because nobody's parents have them. The rule of thumb is the hundred-year cycle: Hazel, Mabel, Theodore and Arthur were top-fifty names for babies born around 1910, nearly vanished by 1970, and have been climbing the charts since the 2010s. Names that were popular in the 1960s and 70s, like Debbie, Gary and Lisa, are dated rather than vintage; they still need another few decades to come back.

The style has recognisable layers. Victorian and Edwardian names are long and Latinate: Clementine, Theodora, Cornelius, Augustus. Early-1900s American names are short and sturdy: Edna, Opal, Elmer, Floyd. The 1920s and 30s loved nicknames as given names, Birdie, Dottie, Hattie, Ned and Gus, and the 1940s brought Marlene, Loretta and Wendell. Middle names in every era tended to be short single-syllable or two-syllable honour names such as Mae, June, Belle, Lee, Ray and Reid, which is why Hazel Marguerite or Walter Reid sounds right and Hazel Brooklyn does not.
