Retro Name Generator

Retro names are the ones that sound like a jukebox, a chrome diner, or a faded colour snapshot: roughly the 1930s through the mid-1960s, after the stiff Victorian names had gone out and before the Jennifers and Jasons arrived. The signature of the era is the friendly nickname used as a real name. Men were Hank, Skip, Bud, Chuck, Sonny, Duke and Red; women were Dottie, Peggy, Patsy, Ginger, Trudy and Babs. Southern families doubled up first names (Betty Lou, Bobby Joe, Billy Ray), and Italian, Irish and Polish surnames filled American cities, which is why Dottie Marchetti or Stan Kowalski feels instantly period.

The other tell is the first-name inventory itself. Dolores, Marlene, Loretta, Shirley, Darlene and Lorraine were chart names for girls in the 1940s; Earl, Floyd, Vern, Clyde, Merle and Roscoe for boys. Put one of those in front of a plain Anglo, Italian or Irish surname and the result sounds like a name on a bowling shirt or a drive-in marquee rather than a modern baby-name list.
