Vigilante Name Generator

A vigilante name does a different job from a superhero name. Superman and Captain Marvel announce power; Batman, Daredevil, The Punisher, Rorschach and Moon Knight announce threat. The best vigilante codenames are short, concrete and a little ugly: a single noun that criminals could mutter to each other (Deadbolt, Hatchet, Tripwire), an ordinary job turned sinister (The Locksmith, The Bookkeeper, Night Nurse), or a piece of the city itself (Third Rail, Stormdrain, Fire Escape). They sound like a rumor before they sound like a brand.

There are a few reliable registers. Hardware and street grit (Crowbar Kid, Rebar, Buzzsaw) suit brawlers with no powers. Quiet, formal names with a definite article (The Ferryman, The Caretaker, The Pallbearer) suit methodical killers and detectives. Nocturnal and weather words (Nightjar, Coldsnap, Graveyard Shift) suit stalkers who work after dark. Neighborhood names (The Wraith of Ward Nine, Low Street Lion) root a vigilante in one turf and make them feel like local folklore.
