Generate Gotham City names with the right gaslight-and-gargoyle feel: costumed rogues, masked vigilantes, GCPD detectives, old-money families, crime syndicates, street gangs and landmarks. Built for Batman fan fiction, DC roleplay and original Gotham-style cities.

About gotham names

Gotham City names work because the whole setting is built on one mood: a 1930s East Coast metropolis that never got over the Depression, all gargoyles, gaslight and rain. The rogues are the clearest example. Classic Batman villains take a mundane trade or object and make it a title, usually with a definite article: the Penguin, the Riddler, the Ventriloquist, the Mad Hatter. Originals in that vein should do the same thing with something equally ordinary, such as the Lamplighter, the Pawnbroker or Doctor Lachrymose, rather than reaching for generic "dark" words.

The civilians carry the other half of the atmosphere. Gotham's old-money families (Wayne, Kane, Elliot, Cobblepot) have Anglo-Dutch surnames and first names that sound like they belong on a brass plaque, while the GCPD and the mob lean Irish, Italian, Polish and Eastern European in the pulp tradition. Street gangs and landmarks follow the city's real comic-book map: neighborhoods like the Narrows, the Bowery, Burnley and Otisburg, and places named for Batman artists and writers, from Sprang Bridge to Finger River.

The list below mixes a few canon anchors with hundreds of original names in the same register. Use the aliases for villains and vigilantes, the full names for detectives, socialites and informants, and the businesses, bridges and districts to fill out your own corner of the city.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Build a villain alias from a mundane Gotham job or object plus a definite article (the Tallyman, the Bookbinder); the contrast with the crime is what makes it unsettling.
  • Give old-money characters a heavy surname and a first name from the 1890s (Cornelius, Ophelia, Thaddeus); give cops and mobsters shorter ethnic surnames and a nickname in quotes.
  • Name landmarks after people and trades, not adjectives: Hobb's End Cannery and Kettering Clockworks feel like Gotham, Dark Tower does not.
  • For a vigilante, pick a small nocturnal animal or a night-shift job (Owlet, Nightwarden, the Night Porter) instead of another bat variant.
  • Anchor your original names to one or two canon locations such as the Narrows or Arkham so readers instantly know which city they are in.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound like it belongs in Gotham?

Gotham names lean on Depression-era pulp: villain aliases built from ordinary trades (the Ventriloquist, the Lamplighter), old-money Anglo-Dutch surnames for the elite, Irish and Italian names for cops and mobsters, and landmarks that sound industrial or Victorian. The more grounded and slightly old-fashioned the name, the more Gotham it feels.

Are these names from the Batman comics?

A set of canon locations is included as anchors, such as Arkham Asylum, Crime Alley, the Iceberg Lounge and the neighborhoods and streets from the comic-book map of Gotham, because a Gotham story usually needs them. The villains, vigilantes, cops, families, gangs and businesses are original and written to match the same style.

Can I use these for a Batman fan fiction or a DC roleplay?

Yes. The original names are free to use in fan fiction, roleplay, tabletop campaigns or your own Gotham-inspired city. Canon places belong to DC, so for a published original work rename them and keep the originals.

How do I name a new Batman-style villain?

Start with a fixation or profession and make it the title: a failed funeral director becomes the Mortician, a disgraced chemist becomes Doctor Quell. Then give them an ordinary civilian name underneath, like Edgar Grimshaw, so the mask and the man contrast.
