Pseudonym Name Generator

A pseudonym has one job: to be taken for a real name by people who have no reason to doubt it. That is why most working pseudonyms are built from the same parts as ordinary names, a first name from a believable generation and a surname common enough to pass but distinctive enough to remember. Eliza Thornbury, Marcus Vale and Nora Lindqvist all sound like people who could sign a contract. The classic way to build one from your real name is to keep something true. Writers often keep their initials so a signature still feels theirs (C. J. Wetherall from Carla Jane), promote a middle name, borrow a grandparent's surname, or translate their own surname into another language. Initial bylines such as J. D. Ravel also hide gender, which is why novelists have favored them for a century. Single-word mononyms like Vesper or Calloway suit artists and musicians better than authors.

Search the name before you commit. A pseudonym that already belongs to a living author, a brand or a notorious person will cause confusion, and check early that the domain and handles are free. Say it aloud, write it in a signature, and make sure you will still like answering to it in ten years.
