Generate Victorian business names in the forms the period used, from Josiah Fenn, Ironmonger and Messrs. Aldous & Pym to The Cheapside Tea Warehouse, Marlowe's Improved Blacking Company and The Dunmouth Steam Navigation Company. The 1,000 invented firms cover shops, street traders, chop houses, banks, mills, railways and seaside piers.

About Victorian business names

A Victorian business name usually tells you who owns the firm and what it sells, in that order. The plainest form puts the trade after the proprietor, as in Josiah Fenn, Ironmonger. Partnerships string surnames together (Crabtree, Hollis & Co.) or take Messrs., the plural of Mr., as in Messrs. Aldous & Pym. A new owner often named his predecessor, which gives Hobbs, late Pringle, Hosier. From 1855 a company could be formed with limited liability, and the word Limited had to close its name, so Blenkinsop's Ironfoundry, Limited cannot be earlier than that.

Bigger concerns preferred grand nouns and long titles. A shop became an Emporium, Repository, Depot or Warehouse, a factory was a Manufactory, and anything run for shareholders spelled out its whole purpose: The Dunmouth Steam Navigation Company, The Marlbury & Thrushford Junction Railway. Makers of branded goods led with Patent, Improved or Celebrated, as in Marlowe's Improved Blacking Company.

The 1,000 names here cover sixteen kinds of business between 1837 and 1901, from costermongers' barrows and chop houses to banks, mills, shipping lines, undertakers, printers and seaside piers. Every firm is invented for fiction, games and themed businesses. Railway and bank titles use made-up towns such as Marlbury and Dunmouth, so nothing here is offered as a record of a real Victorian company.

How to choose Victorian business names

  • Let the size of the firm choose the form. One proprietor takes name and trade (Silas Wimble, Cheesemonger), a partnership takes Messrs. or & Co., and a concern with shareholders takes a full title such as The Marlbury Old Bank or Pendlebury Cotton Mills, Limited.
  • Date the name by its goods. The Daguerreotype Rooms, Marlbury suits the 1840s and 1850s, while The Phonograph Parlour, The Type-Writing Machine Office and The Motor Car & Oil Engine Agency belong to the last decades of the reign.
  • Use the trade words precisely. A draper sells cloth, an ironmonger sells hardware, a costermonger sells fruit and vegetables from a barrow, a tallow chandler makes candles and a ship chandler supplies vessels.
  • Anchor a shop with a street or town. The Cheapside Tea Warehouse and The Holborn Hat Mart place a story in London at once, and an invented town such as Dunmouth or Harrowmere keeps a setting free of real history.
  • For a real themed business, search the company register and the intellectual property database of your country yourself, and leave out Limited, Royal and By Appointment unless you are entitled to them. Nothing on this page has been compared with any register.

Frequently asked questions

What were Victorian shops and companies called?

Most carried the owner's surname with the trade after it, as in Ebenezer Tulk, Linen Draper, or a string of partners such as Crabtree, Hollis & Co. Larger shops chose grand nouns, which gives The Grand Marlbury Emporium and Proudfoot's Fancy Repository. Joint stock companies wrote out what they did, as in Thrushford & District Banking Company.

Are these real Victorian businesses?

No. The names were drafted in the style of the period and screened for duplicates and filler, and the firms are invented. Surnames and trades were common, so a name could match a business that once existed by chance. Treat the list as material for fiction and do not cite it as history.

What do Messrs., late and Limited mean in these names?

Messrs. is the plural of Mr. and stands in front of a partnership, as in Messrs. Lidgett & Thorne. The word late points to the previous owner or address, so Tasker, late Venn & Tasker tells customers that the old firm carries on under a new name. Limited marks a company whose shareholders have limited liability, as in The Marlbury Brewery, Limited.

Which names suit a steampunk or gaslamp setting?

Look for the engineering and scientific trades. The Clockwork Automaton Workshop, The Steam Aerostat Syndicate, Hydraulic Lift & Crane Engineers and Pym & Aldous, Philosophical Instrument Makers all use period wording for machines and instruments. Street names such as Old Ned's Hot Eel Stall and The Crystal Fountain Gin Palace fill in the city around them.
