Vaudeville Act Name Generator
Period billings for a two-a-day variety bill
Generate billing names for acts on a vaudeville or music-hall bill of about 1880 to 1930: song-and-dance teams, sister and brother acts, comedy two-acts, animal acts and novelty musicians. Examples include The Tumbling Tuckers, Hank Hooper, the Whistling Brakeman and Professor Pettibone and His Educated Poodles.
About vaudeville act names
A vaudeville act lived or died by its line on the bill. From about 1880 to 1930 a variety program in the United States, or a music-hall program in Britain, strung together unrelated turns, often eight or nine on a big-time bill, and each one was sold in a few printed words: the name of the act, then its billing matter, a short tagline after a comma that promised what the act did. Teams were billed by two surnames, families by a number and a plural (real bills carried The Four Cohans and The Seven Little Foys), and solo turns borrowed self-awarded titles such as Professor, Madame or The Great.
The 1,000 names here are invented acts written in that period style, and they cover the whole bill: song-and-dance teams, sister and brother acts, comedy two-acts with a straight man, monologists, animal acts, tumblers, jugglers and cyclists, mind readers and quick-change artists, ventriloquists, novelty musicians, family troupes, child wonders, singers and sketch companies. Some are short billings such as The Musical Maguires. Others carry a tagline, like Hank Hooper, the Whistling Brakeman.
The list leaves out the era's blackface and ethnic-caricature turns on purpose, and it stays clear of circus and burlesque billing, which have their own pages.
How to choose vaudeville act names
- Decide the act before the name. A silent turn of tumblers or jugglers suits a short alliterative billing such as The Bounding Billingtons, while a talking act can carry a tagline.
- For a team, put the two surnames first and the promise second, as in Corrigan and Vance, Steps and Smiles.
- Professor, Madame, Signor and The Great were showmanship, not qualifications. Use one such title per bill so it keeps its effect.
- Writing a whole bill for a story, a game or a school revue? Take one name from each kind of act, open and close with the silent turns, and save your strongest comedy name for next to closing, the star spot.
- Before you use a name for a real troupe or show, search for it yourself. The list is not compared with historical bills, so an invented name may match an act that once existed.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real vaudeville acts?
No. The names are invented acts written in the billing style of roughly 1880 to 1930. The guide mentions two real family acts, The Four Cohans and The Seven Little Foys, only to show the pattern, and neither is in the list. Nobody has compared the list with historical bills, so a name may happen to match an act that once existed.
What is billing matter?
It is the short descriptive line printed after an act's name on the program or the poster, usually set off by a comma. It told the audience what the turn did before the curtain rose. In this list it looks like Hank Hooper, the Whistling Brakeman or Cyril Fanshawe, the Gentleman Juggler.
What kinds of acts are in the list?
Every spot on the bill is covered. There are sister acts such as The Merriweather Sisters, animal acts such as Winkler's Wonder Dogs, ventriloquists such as Walter Pym and Woodrow and novelty musicians such as The Xylophone Zimmermans, along with dance teams, comedy two-acts, monologists, tumblers, jugglers, mind readers, family troupes, child wonders, singers and sketch companies.
Why are there no blackface or ethnic comedy acts?
Those turns were common on real vaudeville bills, and they were built on mocking people. This page leaves them out so that every name can be used today for a play, a novel, a tabletop game or a school revue.
