Stage magicians have used invented names since the profession moved from fairgrounds to theatres. Ehrich Weiss became Houdini in tribute to Robert-Houdin; Harry Kellar and Howard Thurston were billed as The Great; William Robinson performed as Chung Ling Soo. Those examples set the three enduring patterns. The billing name puts a grand adjective before a surname or single name (The Great Zamora, The Amazing Kreskin, The Mysterious Marlowe). The single exotic name, often ending in a vowel or a hard z (Cardini, Slydini, Okito, Zoltar), sounds foreign and vaguely ancient. The honorific name adds a professional or aristocratic title (Professor Hoffmann, Madame Zenobia, Count Orloff), a Victorian habit that lent scientific or occult respectability.

Contemporary magicians go the other way. David Blaine, Derren Brown, and Shin Lim perform under their real names, while street and TV acts favor one punchy word (Dynamo) or a mock title (Piff the Magic Dragon). Mentalists lean on words like mind, oracle, and see; escape artists still borrow Houdini's Handcuff King template.

When choosing a stage name, think about how it will look on a poster and sound from a compère's mouth. Alliteration (Sultan of Sleight, Marquis of Misdirection) is traditional and memorable; a name that hints at your specialty, whether cards, escapes, or mind-reading, does part of your marketing for you.
