Circus performer names were built to be shouted by a ringmaster and printed six feet tall on a poster, so they follow billing conventions that go back to P.T. Barnum. Headliners take a superlative plus a stage surname: The Great Wallendas, The Amazing Randi, The Astounding Zamora. Flying trapeze and tumbling troupes are billed as families, real or invented, with an alliterative Italian, Spanish, or Slavic surname (The Flying Codonas, The Flying Zacchinis, The Flying Karamazov Brothers), because the great acrobatic dynasties really did come from Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Eastern Europe.

Military and academic titles lend authority: Captain, Colonel, Professor, Doctor, and Herr Doktor were favorites for ringmasters, animal trainers, and sideshow lecturers. Sideshow "human marvels" were billed by descriptive epithets rather than names, such as The Human Pincushion, The Elastic Lady, or The Boy with the Rubber Bones. Strongmen used mythic names like Atlas, Samson, and Hercules; strongwomen like Katie Sandwina became famous under a single memorable name.

Contemporary circus performers still use most of these tools. An aerialist might perform as Miss Sylvie Silks, a fire performer as Salamandra, a comedy acrobat as The Amazing Ottavio. Choose the act first, then pick the title and rhythm that let an emcee sell it with a drumroll.
