Generate names for the daemons, sorcerers and cults of Tzeentch: daemon true names like Tz'arkoth, Lords of Change like Zarakh'tul the Fate-Twister, Horrors like Pink Horror Gigglewick, Tzaangors like Twistbray Skaarok and Arcanites like Magister Vellum Cray.

About Tzeentch names

Tzeentch is one of the four great Chaos gods of Games Workshop's Warhammer settings, present in both Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar. Known as the Changer of the Ways and the Architect of Fate, Tzeentch is the god of change, sorcery, ambition and schemes inside schemes. The followers are sorcerers, plotters and scholars who wanted to know too much, and nine is the sacred number.

The list covers the whole following. Daemon true names are clipped and angular, built on z, k, x and tz and broken by apostrophes: Tz'arkoth, Kzy'thar, Xi'rakh. Lords of Change carry a title about fate or deceit, such as Zarakh'tul the Fate-Twister, while the lesser daemons get lighter names: Pink Horror Gigglewick, Blue Horror Grumblesnitch, Screamer Skyrazor. Age of Sigmar has a full share, with Magisters, Fatemasters, Kairic Acolytes, Gaunt Summoners and the beaked Tzaangors (Twistbray Skaarok, Aviarch Kiirek Skyglaive). The rest are sorcerers and cult leaders for Warhammer 40,000, a small group of Thousand Sons ranks, cults and cabals such as Cabal of the Shifting Hour, and pure titles like The Liar Who Told the Truth.

A small number of known figures and cults, such as Kairos Fateweaver and the Pyrofane Cult, are included as reference points. Everything else is invented in the style of the setting for your army or character.

How to choose Tzeentch names

  • Say a daemon name aloud before you write it on a roster. The hard stops of k, x, z and tz are the point, and a name like Zy'kaxis should still be sayable in one breath. If the apostrophe trips you, drop it: Zykaxis reads just as well.
  • Use nine where you can. Nine is Tzeentch's number, so a cult of the Ninth Eye, a Fatemaster of the Ninth Path or a unit with nine named models is an easy nod to the background.
  • Pick an epithet about method, not muscle. Servants of Tzeentch win by plans, bargains and foresight, so the Promise-Eater, the Unpicker of Knots or the Hourglass Thief says more than any title about strength.
  • Name Horrors as a set. A Pink Horror splits into two Blue Horrors, and each of those into a pair of Brimstone Horrors, so a cheerful name such as Gigglewick can pass down to sour and then to sputtering ones.
  • Keep the Thousand Sons apart. This page holds only a few ranked sorcerers of that legion; for Prosperine legionary names and Rubric Marines, the Thousand Sons list goes much further.

Frequently asked questions

What do Tzeentch daemon names sound like?

Sharp and birdlike, with hard consonants and a break in the middle: Azh'tek, Qy'zarath, Tza'khet. Greater daemons add a title about fate, knowledge or lies, as in Xi'qothal the Nine-Eyed or Zal'ixtor the Thief of Tomorrows. Horrors, Flamers and Screamers get nicknames that match how they behave, such as Blue Horror Sulk.

Are these the names of real Warhammer characters?

Only a small share are. Known figures such as Kairos Fateweaver, the Changeling, the Blue Scribes and Vilitch the Curseling, and a few cults from the Age of Sigmar books such as the Pyrofane Cult and the Hosts Duplicitous, are included so you can hear the style. The rest are invented for this list, and none of those is presented as a name from Games Workshop's books. Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar are Games Workshop's settings and are named here only to say what the names are for.

Does the list cover the Disciples of Tzeentch in Age of Sigmar?

Yes, about a quarter of it. Mortal Arcanites include Magister Vellum Cray, Fatemaster Othric of the Ninth Path and Kairic Adept Lysara Venn, and there are Gaunt Summoners named for their towers, such as Gaunt Summoner of the Glass Stair. Tzaangors have their own share, from Twistbray Skaarok to Tzaangor Shaman Vraakh Many-Eyes.

How is this different from the Thousand Sons name generator?

The Thousand Sons page names the legion: Prosperine sorcerers and their Rubric Marines. This page names the god's own following, which means daemons first, then Tzaangors, mortal cultists, cabals and titles, for both Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar. Use the two together for an army that mixes legionaries with daemons.
