Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles names follow three rules that Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird set in 1984 and every reboot since has kept. Turtles are named after Renaissance artists because Splinter found an art book in the sewer: Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo, later joined by Venus de Milo and Jennika. A new turtle OC almost always gets another painter or sculptor, so Botticelli, Caravaggio, Artemisia, Sofonisba and even Hokusai or Basquiat all read as 'turtle' instantly. Girl turtles often take the feminine forms Donatella, Raphaela or Leonarda.

Mutants get pun names. Bebop and Rocksteady are musical terms, Hypno-Potamus, Meat Sweats and Repo Mantis are jokes with an animal hidden inside, and Leatherhead, Muckman, Pizzaface and Scumbug describe exactly what you see. The formula is a one- or two-word name that is a little tough, a little gross and funny out loud; the more the animal pun hurts, the more it sounds like the 1987 toy line. Humans and ninja are the serious third register: Hamato Yoshi, Oroku Saki, Tang Shen and Karai follow Japanese family-name-first convention, and the Foot Clan ranks fill out with short, plain names.

Mix the list to build a whole crew: an artist for the turtle, a pun for the mutant and a Hamato or Oroku name for the ninja who trained them.
